Does anyone know the largest rear speakers you can put in the rear panels, or what the size is in there already? The new drivers and passenger door panels I have made really look good with the front speakers deleted, and I am thinking if I replace the speakers in the rear (one is not working at all), that I can get a good enough sound in the car, and leave the door panels unmolested. Any advice?

4X6 is the stock size. I think there is a plate in there that has a round circle in it that unbolts out but I don't know what it was for or if you could actually put a speaker in that spot.

4x6 of some sort.

Check Crutchfield.com, they may have options for a larger speaker.

We are pretty limited with stock speaker size/locations.

Most go to a box/tube in the rear.

And if you have not had the pleasure of changing out the rear ones, you will soon find out what a joy it is

Also, since most pull the spare wheel, that makes a lot of room for a subwoofer and would be out of the way, etc.

I removed the plate in the rear which will give you a hole for a 6.5" round. I put some Infinity 6.5" with crossovers back there. The hole was a little big for the 6.5 so I made a plate that fit in the original location to bolt the speakers to. I put the tweeters in the door panel above the window switches. Very clean install and sounded awesome.

Great! Many of the earlier cars do not have the openings for the larger speakers in the rear. I made a plate to cover the partial 4x6 hole, and put Alpine's 6 3/4" speakers back there. The sound is fantastic!

1987. the rear speakers have a bracket that is easily revised to put in 6.5 in speaker...they left the space reay to use, seems to me there must have been an upgrade option for a 6.5.

When I had speakers (and an interior ) I used 4x6 Alpines in the stock openings and made a set of plywood inserts for the storage bins and put a 5x7 in each of those as well. I had spacers in the doors with 6.5" rounds in the door panels (I think 6.5" maybe 5"?)

I had (6) mid size speakers, (2) tweets (A pillars) and (2) 10" kicker comp 10 subs behind the seat (box was flush with seat tops) Still left a little cargo area and sounded key. I used a Alpine head unit to run the 8 seperates (4 off the head unit, 4 using a small amp) and a punch 250 fosgate amp for the 10s...

Just so you don't get your hopes up for an easy install of something other then 4x6's, my 86 951 did NOT have a removable plate. To go with anything other then a 4x6 I had to cut out some metal.

I tried to get to the back speakers and didnt want to break anything so i quit. I got 4X6 JBL gto's that scream, alpine 6X9's in the back (far back of hatch fitted flush with carpet faceing strait up in corners) and a jl 12w0 sub. Whole set-up was $300 for speakers, $100 eclipse 5-channel amp, and new HU.

If i wanted to spend more money and get a better soune then i would have done the 6.5" components up front but my set up was ALOT cheaper and easier to install.

I put in 6x8 components. Had to remove the spacer that the stock 4x6's fit in of course and I had to do some minor trimming of the metal. I made custom spacers from a pattern that Robby supplied, works like a champ and sounds real perty.

I used Boston Acoustics separates in the front ( I have a 88TS so there is a little one can do with as far as the size in the front goes
In the rear I put ADS S7's ( 7 inch rounds, this required a little trimming but really very little.)
So I used the S7''s as my sub. The only bummer is that with the TS they have a special grill in the rear near the quarter window So the acoustics have a bit to be desired

Just to clarify this (I've been looking at stereo options myself), the 86 does not have the removable panel for the larger rear speakers but the later models do?

How hard is it to cut a larger hole for the rear speakers? Also, are you guys running aftermarket grilles on the rears or did you keep the stock venting in the interior panels?

Looks like I will pick up something in a 6-6.5" speaker then. Modifying is not a problem. Nice thing about metal...if you mess it up, you can weld it right back together again

The metal in that area is really thin and easy to work with, you won't have any trouble, just measure twice and cut once!
