what gauge is the alternator line? mines seen better days and im planning on replacing soon. would it be alright to go directly to the battery to simplify things at the starter?

PorscheDoc

From the Clarke's Garage thread

I'm assuming the cable in the center is the starter to alternator cable. What do the smaller wires go to and what is that other connection that looks different from the others?

That is your starter to alternator cable. You have 2 connections at the starter and 2 connections at the alternator, 1 for the big lug, and one for the small lug. The 2 small lug/wires then meet in the middle and run up the firewall and attach with the white quick connect near the brake booster. This is for your ignition. Notice in the pictures, I had not yet crimped on the 2 small lugs for the small wires (they are just a standard ring terminal)

you can run a line directly from the alternator to the battery and one from the starter to just the battery alone that is how I have it set up

so you would only keep the small ones that meet and then go to near the break booster?

edit: also did you ever decide to make these sets to sell? if so, hit me with a price; I thought I was going to do it myself, but being lazy and in school it seems so much easier to have someone else do it

The cables I have go like this:
-battery->starter
-battery->battery to main gound
-battery to alternator and the little plug near the brake booster
-battery to firewall

I noticed my lights were quite brighter with the cables but I dont know if that is because of the old stock cables or the 0 gauge wire im using for the battery cables

Its hard to go straight to the battery, since theres two big wires coming out and no more holes.

IceShark used 1AWG, 2 or 4 would work fine for the alternator though since it doesnt see over 120 amps. 0 AWG will have zero benefit over 1, and there wont be any real difference between 1, 2 or 4. 120 amps over 6 feet of 4 AWG is 0.18 volts of drop. 2 AWG is 0.12. 1 AWG is 0.096.

Why run a line from the alternator all the way to the battery? That adds yet another lug to the battery, it is cramped enough as is. What is the purpose of doing so, versus just running the line from the alternator to the starter?

I would think you would get better charging since its a direct connection to the battery

I did mine that way since IceShark made the alternator line extra long for me. It wound up being too long and I didnt feel like shortening it

And IMHO its six of one half a dozen of the other. Its a pain getting both on the starter lug.

I run mine from the alternator to the battery. 4 gauge and just drill an additional hole in the rubber grommet.
