Default Official Gulf Porsche 944 GTR Turbo Project Thread **Pics Updated Today Jan 13**

Okay guys, lets not get this one off track. Creating the thread with some pics now to make documentation easier later on. I'll update when the project gets parts in/notable progress is made. Behold the birth of the Gulf Porsche 951.

The car arrived from Texas to North Carolina on December 22, 2006. Transport company was Intercity Lines, as you can see my car was in good company. The guy I delt with to set the move up (Bob Sellers) was very friendly and catered to my needs. I will continue to use their services without second thought.

The shop doing the work is Martin Brother's Paint & Body. They're a small hot-rod shop and will be giving my baby all the attention she needs from now until April.

Today she's off to the media shop where she will be blasted (plastic *****) to get down to the metal so the real work can begin.

I do have to say a huge thank you to the Martin Brothers as they have been a joy to work with thus far and are very enthusiastic about everything I throw their way. Remember I'm coordinating this project from 12,000 miles away, these guys are amazing. Thanks Lynn

Now for some pics: It was a cold and rainy day...
"I like it when she's on top...."

Last look...she'll never be the same

Sorry if I missed it, but what all are you having done? What made you go with this shop rather then one in Texas?

Don't worry about the drivers comments. He's nothing more then hired help. You know he went home that night and told his buddies that he got to carry two Porsches that day.

No, waaaay off. She'll be getting the suspension setup at a later date once the body is finished. Leda adjustable.

Some of the parts on the way to get installed:

Kenisis K57s 17x10 & 13

por951turbo: He works for Intercity Lines...the carry dauer 962s, that truck had nothing but Porsches, as is their usual. They're currently shipping a bunch of cars for an auction, most of them are near priceless pieces of automotive art/history. He's just a snob.

I went for this shop as they were the most enthusiastic I talked to, and I discussed the details to MANY shops around the United States. I'm not giving this project over to anyone that isn't as excited as I am about the outcome. Even Hank at GT Racing is excited about the setup and use. BTW the main reason for the creation at this point is the Cannonball Run in July '07, it made me get off my butt and get to doin' so to speak.

The project is a severe widebody that will continue to push the envelope to the max. There have been many revisions to the current setup and the final result will yield a Gulf Porsche motorsport livery from the 1971 Le Mans 917k Chassis #0004.

All windows except the windshield will be lexan, the passenger and driver doors will have fixed slider windows.

One of the most trick parts: Single piece front end..................................................sit back and watch her take shape, I assue you all it will be worth the wait.

Jet: Nope, the Gulf Porsche endevor with the 917k is to me the most sporting & best looking scheme that I have seen. I have made the decision, instead of bringing an older car to an updated form, why not back date it a bit to something a little more period correct.

Just like the 911 guys, sometimes going back in time a little, maybe even only a year or so can evoke emotions stronger than most would think possible (for gear heads that is).

Mike: Me neither!!! I'm going for a full black alcantara interior (door panels keeping arm rests for the run, dash upper & lower, A pillars, console, rear quarter surrounds)

When the shop preps for paint by taking it down to metal, are they going to be able to avaoid damaging the galvanizing? I know sanding to bare metal will wreck but don't know about the impact of beads.

I've decided to go the other direction again, stripping it all the way down. I've abandoned all hope of my car ever being for the "street" again. Doesnt mean it wont be plated and insured though

As for the truck driver, meh, as I'm sure you know, you run into those people in the pcar world all the time. It comforts me knowing that 95% of them are slower in the straights, corners, and braking zones

guns, not sure where you're getting the dash done but you might look up Paul Champagne leather, they're just over the bay in Corpus Christi Tx. They just did Jim L's seats and they are wonderful. The steering wheel on the 930 is going over next week when they return.

http://www.designpaulchampagne.com/928.html
Now understand, the 928 is a show car to showcase what they are capable of. Heres a pic of Jims seats just after delivery, also new carpet. The flash lightened it up a bit but they're deep burgundy and glove soft.

Streck: The plastic beads are safe enough to be used on fiberglass without a negative impact. The galv. is safe. They're sending it off to get the blasting done on the doors, roof, quarter panels & rear today!!!
