HG Replacement Begins
Well Arash (FRPorscheman) came over today and we began the head gasket replacement. Everything went smoothly considering some of the horror stories I have read here.
We got the intake, hard pipes, fuel rail and other stuff off.
All the bolts came out with no trouble and we were feeling good.
Of course we also drained the coolant and oil. There was definately some ugly milkshake pouring out. Here is a pic of the oil drain plug......
hmmmm......yummy milk chocolat
next we got to work on the head and AMAZINGLY Arash got every bolt off with no problems.....nothing snapped.....nothing got stuck......it all came off with ease....
After all the head bolts were off we moved to the crossover pipe and got all the bolts except 1 to come off. So Arash was finally able to pull out his dremel and went to work on the bolt. After the bolt was cut the head was pulled off with a little bit of prying.
Inspected the head gasket and I think there may have been 2 failure points.
So now I will take the head to be machined and made have it ported and polished.
Also will do a few of those "While you are in there" things, like AOS seal, oil cooler gasket, all new coolant hoses, and such.
more pics of the finish up work at a later date.

Looks like a textbook operation - glad to hear it's going well.
P.S. - Your Andial engine would look soooooo good with some stainless fasteners.........

Also, you'll want to use a widefire (or stock) head gasket either way.

Looks like it blew over #4??
Also seems to go in that same place of the HG on most cars. Right on the edge for the coolant passages.

Roger, I'm well behind you at the moment on my rebuild. Just torn down the engine last night. I found some minor scoring (can barely catch it with a finger nail) in bores 2 and 3 from carbon breaking loose. I also have valve kiss marks on all of the pistons. The PO of the engine must have thrown a T belt and had it fixed because the valve are straight and the guides are new. I'm pulling pistons, measuring the bores, and checking crankshaft play today. It sure is nice to work on a motor on a stand. I barely got dirty. Good luck on getting your car back on the road soon.
