new clutch $$$$
a new clutch job is 17 hours labor @ about $100.00/hr and maybe $1500.00 in parts? i think the day is fast approaching: lot of vibration and noise , motor mounts are good. balance shafts good. anyway is this what takes to keep this car going? it's hard to justify spending that much especially when i paid $9k for the car, hey don't get me wrong i put 93k miles on it, currently odo: 263,000 miles. is this what everyone pays to have a clutch put replaced?

Shops typcially charge for the book rate... If book rate says 17 hours then its 17 hours @ shop rate.
17 times $100 = $1,700 +parts
Parts i think would cost around 700 from a shop....
$2,400... call a shop for an estimate. I'm pretty sure that the job isnt in AllData so no doubt many shops will not take that job.

every shop ive called says 13 hours for a clutch job. I did one on the ground under the car in 12 hours and the next time it took me like 7 hours so im sure someone w/ a lift could do it at least 8 hours.

Exactly what I was thinking. There are plenty of listers in your area that are always looking for an excuse to pound a few beers and get dirty.

it might be a good idea to find a used flywheel, get it resurfaced before you start the clutch job and do the RMS while you're in there. It would be a shame to do the clutch and then 1000 miles later the RMS start leaking, then all that $hit has to come out again. Just one of those, "while I'm in there things"

As well as repacking the CV joints. I echo what the board says...DIY
I thought it would be a big challenge but taking your time and having the correct tools is half the battle. I armed myself with plenty of reading material before tackling the job which was helpful. Clark Garage, June 2006 Excellence and Haynes are some to name.

I have a different perspective. The clutch was the first real job I did on my 951 and with that kind of experience I am scarred for life. I will pull the engine before I do the clutch without a lift again. Better yet, I'd pay an experienced shop their take to do the job.... but not 17 hours, no way. I thought the point of paying a shop was having an edge on the task.

Typically I meet the customer in the middle and charge 10 hours for clutch on an NA or turbo with a 2 piece crossover. You can't keep your doors open if you can't charge book time, but when there is a 10-12 hour spread on what it takes versus booktime, then you have to compromise in the middle somewhere.
