Yes, but instead of the round O-ring I always use a rubber gasket that fits on the thermostat itself.

Tried that but it does not fit right... WP housing has larger gap for the snapring

use the o-ring. I have been through several water pumps and sometimes the grove in the pump is put in different places so depending on the pump you will need either the round (larger) oring or the smaller flat gasket. I don't know if there is any reasoning behind the groove being manufactured differently, probably just to get you thinking.

As long as the thermostat isn't loose it will work just fine. So what if some water gets past it before the thermostat opens because of the temperature.

There is some slight back and forth movement in the thermostat I just installed in someones car, maybe 2-3mm. Is that acceptable? My car had the metal spacer between the snap ring and thermostat, but this 84 doesn't have it.

If the thermostat itself moves after you put the snap ring in, it will not do it's job effectively because coolant will be passing by even with the valve closed. The car will take longer to warm up, not really sure how serious it is.

There was a running change in water pump design in July 86. The old style had a thermostat retention groove that was 4.5mm from the seat and the newer style has a groove that is 7mm from the seat. The thermostat was also change (944 106 019 00) with the addition of the larger support washer.
If you are using a rebuilt pump and a ‘generic’ thermostat kit you may not be getting the right combination of parts.

You are correct. I am using a rebuilt pump (Zims with Napa stat) and the grove is different from the new style pumps. The submitted picture layout appears to work installed everything fits nice and snug without any stat movement.

If I try using the seal around the stat it leaves to much of a gap. If I try using both( large rubber seal and the seal around the stat) the snap ring will not fit in its grove.

thanks,
