Default Video: Lifter noise or something else?

I pulled apart the top end of my engine and cleaned the lifters out real good, got the head machined, etc, put it all back together. I still have this noise though and I can't get it to go away.

I've run it with 15w-50 I've done the sea foam thing, I've run it with 10w-30 for a little while (idle), and then switched it back to 15w-50. Its probably idled for a grand total of 45 minutes and the noise is still there.

Are my lifters just totally shot or is this something else entirely?

Exhaust leak? Right around the 24 second mark sounds nasty however..

I've heard a bad rod bearing, it's rather obvious - more like a clunk than a clack, a very deep sound. Does that describe what you're hearing?

My 951 sounded a lot like that. Two of my studs/nuts were loose on the exhaust manifold. Hopefully something like that is your issue.

We just ran into this problem last night after we installed our engine. Started fine and that God awful ticking sound was the same, "lifter". We then pulled the dme relay and plugs, turned the motor over and no sound from the lifters. So, we put it all back together and started it... same noise. Then my buddy had another 944 with same noise a couple years ago and said that it was coming from the balance shafts. So, we pulled the balance shaft belt and started it up... no noise. So today, we are going to make sure the the balance shafts are set in properly and re-try. I'll let you know how it goes. FYI

Yeah its definitely not normal sounding if you listen to it in person it sounds really bad.

I'm thinking about pulling the whole engine and just doing a full rebuild on it. The last thing I want to do is put out $600 for lifters, and have it not fix anything. At least if I do a full rebuild I can be happy that the engine is going to be in good shape.

Have you tried a mechanics stethescope? They are very cheap, and they will help you pinpoint the source of the noise. If it is a lifter, or belt slap, or whatever, you will be a much much better chance of isolating it with a stethescope.

I have actually. Unfortunately I don't have enough experience listening to engines to be able to tell definitely what it is.

I have had this sound alsow, it was a M5 bolt in the 1ste cilinder, it smashed the hole piston up. so you could check every cilinder with a camera.

Here's a clip of my lifter noise that turned out to be 4 lifters that were bad, one was so gone the button pushed completely flush with very little effort. I was fortunate to have another set to go through...of 16 I had 9 that tested good. Once replaced the noise was history...just normal sounding lifters.

Hope this helps.

Did you have the cam tower apart at all? if so, check to see if the front cheesehead bolt hasn't come loose. When it does it makes an aweful racket that's hard to distinguise between a lifter and rod knock.

How do you test lifters?

Sounds like it could be the valves hitting the pistons. Has your oil pressures dropped? Your idiot lights come on? I wonder if you crank slipped backwards a bit.

As for testing cam followers. If the piston button drop soon after use then they are no longer holding oil sufficiently you need new ones
