Limited slip differential

Whats the deal with everybody buying whole new transmissions for gaining limited slip? I see AOR label transmissions going for so much money when somebody is just trying to buy limited slip.

Do you guys know where I can just buy just the differential (LSD)?

I've seen some quaife ones but they're really expensive. Guard transmission also has some differentials.

Any recommendations?

You just named the 2 to look at, lol.

Most people buy the entire transaxle because they probably don't want to have to deal with installing a differential into the transaxle.

Cost!! you can remove and replace the trans in about 3 hours with hand tools,,just the limited slip requires special tools and is not a do it yourself, as a rule. That said I just put a limited slip box in the car and WOW big change, on the track no more one wheel peel out of corners and stable hard braking, not 100% sure why on the braking, but I know it stopped squirming.

AOR transaxles also have harder first and second gears.

The downside is that the factory LSD isn't really up to any track work etc. Doesn't last too long in my experience and only 40% locking.

AOR transaxles = Turbo S transaxles

incase it wasn't clear

Check out the most recent issue of Excellence. There is an article on how to install a Guards LSD in a 944 trans.Nothing crazy in terms of tools needed.. seems like a very reasonable job to do.

I had to have mine rebuilt a couple of times before I got the Motorsport one. I wouldn't say I dump the clutch etc so I'm happy with the stronger version. Not sure the OEM one was designed for more than fast Autobahn driving?

I had a factory one shimmed up for more lock ..
I would expect as it would slip less it would take a little longer to wear out
you can test it with a torque rench there is a given break out torque for given lock ratio i believe..

there was also i good thread on here if you search saying that they will perform differently according to the oil used in them .
it basicly said you build them a bit tight put one type of oil in then when they start to slip a little you change to anther kind of oil and they get grippy again and you get another little bit from them befor pulling them out to service

I installed a Guard this winter. You don't want to tackle the installation of a $2,500 part in your trans unless you're pretty damn proficient and have the tools and shims. You further need additonal cooling if you expect to run sessions longer than 45 minutes. Removal and install are the straightforward.

Kinda silly.

You're much better off buying a non-lsd turbo trans for cheap and installing a Guard LSD for a few dollars more than a AOR trans with 50K+ miles on it.

Guard. And not the torque biasing differ. You want the regular LSD in the 50/80 flavor.

23 years later and only one rebuild this year, the LSD was in good shape and this is with plenty of DE's on it.
