Default Check your heater control valve or watch what can happen

Check your heater control valve. Mine failed while on the track the other day leading to a pretty scary tank slapper. Here's the failed part....

And here's what happens when all that anti freeze dumps onto the rear wheels on the track. Fortunately it was the first run on the day so was only cruising about 5 or 6/10ths or it could have been a lot worse.

So...check that part and maybe save your car....

Nice save. I haven't replaced mine but will when the new engine goes in. How much of a bitch was it to replace?

I put a manual one with a shut off on it years ago when my heater clip failed. I have a new vac one just never have installed it. I actually thought about bypassing the heater core since I never drive the car when it's cool

Replacing would be a non-issue with the engine out.

And it's not the worst part to replace with the engine in. Back of the firewall is a little tight but you really don't have to remove much to get access. Not nearly as bad as getting to stuff under the intake manifold or the like.

Yep, I know it will be a non issue with me, just curious how bad it was when the engine was in!

Don't you have a brand new one to put on it?

My heater control valve broke this weekend, luckily i was just down the street from home. Poured out all my coolant within 3 blocks. Very easy to remove, i don't think it'll be as easy to put back in. BTW is there anything to tie it into the car, it was just floating around held in by the hoses?

Yep, it is just floating around. No clips or fasteners

They aren't that bad to replace.. I had to replace a hose that blew up off of that once on the side of the road in the pouring rain.. that was a blast.

This happens even more often on the 968 because they moved the HCV to a hotter location -- and often with even more dramatic results. On the 968, HCV is right above the front right wheel -- perfect position to spill slippery substance during a track day or an autoX day.

Lots of people have used a metallic HCV from an Audi instead of the plastic Porsche piece that looks like this:

These may break more often on 968 however there are a lot less clutch replacements on those cars. It was moved on latercars since hot coolant will destroy a clutch quickly.

Thanks for the info on the metal HCV!! Do you happen to have a part number? With one of these I may finally put one back in my car. I had an OEM one fail 8 years ago and never put it back in(wasn't worth losing another clutch).

Based on searches, rather than my receipts... it's a "heater valve" for Audi 100 or Audi 5000 (and possibly others). I believe it is "Four Seasons 74671", (Autozone part # 5910, Napa Product Number: BK 6601410). If you google search for heater control valve for audi 100 (5000, 80, 90 etc, etc) you'll find other references to it.

I'm not 100% on the part number, so double check when you see the part in hand.

Hello, thanks for the info seemed like that was the ideal fix, changed mine but still have the same problem, watche the new valve and it opens up after about 20 sec sending scortching heat into the vents! any more ideas? Climate control sensor maybe?
Thank you
