New Hood Vent
I was bored today so decided to start on my hood vents I had been planning for a while. Eventually there will be three vents, the large vent shown here and two smaller vents on the side panels of the hood about 2/3 up the hood, sort of over the strut mount. Here are some pics, please keep in mind this is one day of work and the cleaning up and finnishing starts tomorrow. The vent right now is sitting up off the hood for molding purposes, but when done it will fit into the hood. I would be interested in feedback on design before I spend twenty + hours putting on the finnishing touches.

I also have been toying with hood vents, but your's look like it will conflict with the inner support section that runs right down the center of the hood. I'm thinking two on either side of the center support would be better. How'll that one clear the support?

I think its is very nice work and i would buy 2
1 for my 88 944TS and 1 for my 88M3
but i would like to see it narrower and make it flush to the hood no side bulges
let me know i am interested!!!
carbon fiber would make me pre pay now

Bob...........I'm planning on cutting out the center support of the hood to sink the vent into the hood. With all the added curves and angles of the vent it will add a tremendous amount of rigidity to the hood. Long term I will make a composite hood with the vents built in. Wait 'till I do my smaller vents for the side of the hood, one on either side of the center support would be just like your idea.
NYPOWR4........The vents are raised to break the airflow over the hood to draw air form the engine bay. If the vents are flush with the hood they would be less effective.

nice
David,
How effective are those stamped vents? It looks as if the top of the vents are too flat to disrupt the airflow and draw out any significant heat. Did you take before and after temp readings? In any case, they look very nice.

What I would also suggest is a way of combining a hood vent with the vented nose panels to give some flow through. I am getting some side vents from D9 put in a c/f hood now and was also looking at the front vent, but the bigger i/c pipes present a serious impediment. We were looking at doing some ducting from the back of the radiator to the hood vent but this looks unlikely at this stage.

I'm running SFR's 2.5' i/c pipes and the vent will clear. I also looked at the ducting off the back of the radiator but it would pretty much be a verticle sheet. The size of the vent (large) was designed in part to get as much air out from in front of the motor as possible.

It may sound like aero geeky talk but i like the vents over strut only concept ..
for these 3 reasons .
1 less effect on the any down force the bonnet and windscreen rake might generate.
2 cools more on the engine bay takes a bit of header heat out ..
3 less drag as the thinner hotter air has less drag on the a pillar and side windows
4 styling i think its easier to get it looking right you could perhaps intergrate the crease in the bonnet ..

I get what you're saying Adam and I can't argue as there is so little hard evidence to argue for or against, but I would also contend that clearing the hot air out of the radiator, i/c, and possibly the a/c condenser is pretty important and the front vent will help this bigtime?

For my car I like the vents towards the rear of the hood just in front of the rubber seal like David shows.
With that rubber seal there is nowhere for hot air to go except down under the car which isn't a good thing. Heat rises so naturally you would want cold air coming into the car from a low spot in front of the engine which they did however they did not provide anywhere for that air to escape once heated by the engine. With vents over the strut towers, this allows that hot air to freely vent out the top like it wants to and thus allows more cool air to come in.
