How to clean dirty coolant tank?
The topic is what I was wondering......I bought a used coolant tank from a fellow lister, when it arrived it had a nice almost white appearance, but the inside of the tank was ...well...a little grungy... headgasket or oil cooler seals gone bad... The one on my car is BROWN, not dirty, but very BROWN...
So I tried: Tide..................Nope Clorox...............Nope Mineral Spirits....Nope Goof off.............Nope took breather...explained to wife that bathtub will be OK, and YES I will clean up my mess...BUT I had to get this part clean first... Baking Soda......A Little but NOPE Krud Kutter........Nope Goof Off Gell......Nope GASOLINE.........NOPE..and don't try it... then I waited...letting it soak in mixture of chemicals.... days passed...wife asks me to move part for kids to use bathtub...OK more days pass.... then I had an idea.... What's the best part of Waking Up??? It's Folgers in your tub...  MMMM...I like the results....  All flushed out, NOW I can't wait to get this thing installed....  All those other things didn't do a damn thing to the crap on the inside of the tank, but $1.00 or so worth of Coffee stripped that gunk right out... some vigourous shaking involved... but voila... now it can go into the engine bay.... |

Coffee ????? really......... what made you think of that ? LOL
Nice job, I tried all kind of things like you did, gave up and bought a new one. Will give coffe a try, was that leaded or unleaded ?

I always thought people used things like bleach, lemon juice and sometimes salt to clean stuff like that.

it was white, but NASTY on the inside.... I didn't get any pics before I started
 , but shot a PM to the lister I got it from to ask him if he has any pics of it...

Think there's anything we could put in the tank (while it's empty of course) to seal the plastic and preserve the white finish?

you could always paint it and tap two holes with 2 small J pipes and connect with a clear piece of tube between them to tell if the coolant level is adequate but of course that just 2 more places it can leak but if done right you shouldnt have problems

I have to laugh that coffee worked so well. I had a tank that laughed at any chemicals but the only discoloration was from residue. I put some fine gravel in it with water and shook it around through all the chambers; getting all the gravel out took longer than all the other cures combined. I'll give the coffee a try but I still think it's one of those miracle concepts I'll never fully comprehend.
