Default Who has test fitted COP's on the 968 head?

As topic. I will be looking into a coil on plug setup to save some space but instead of buying 5 different types of COP's to try out I though I'd give it a shot to see if anyone here has done any testing?

There's some stuff on the valve cover casting that probably won't allow for a typical VAG 115 type COP with it's bulky head. A smaller headed COP is probably needed.

The AEM pencil COP (CBR COP originally) looks good fitment wise but they are CDI type which requires a CDI box. I'd like to use a COP with in-built igniter.

Any good ideas before I start shopping around for testing purposes?

What's the mJ rating of VAG 115 COP? Can't find much info on the web.

Are you planning to run E85 eventually, with which spark plugs?

Not sure of their rating, but the VAG COP's are well proven to over 250 hp/cylinder.
Yes I will eventually go over to E85 for the 3.0l 16v engine. I've had good success with regular copper plugs, just go down one or two heat steps.

I'm cynical of the the reliability of COP as many OEM things did it then droped it also a 3.0 4 banger with shake shafts is a shaky engine . Also most hard core things I'v seen are running CDI.
I must admit I'm finding mount 4 coils with short leads a bit of a head arch .
they will end up wich lots of head shield above the headers or hanging from the strut brace .

Exactly, it would be such a clean setup with COP's.

My primary concern is the tendancy I have heard of, for the COP with built in ignitors to die premature death from vibration.

I do not have (other than my audi... ) first hand experience with COP dying from vibration, but have heard words to this affect!

Gustaf,
most likely we are going to use these 997 COPs with our both project engines (8V & 16V). Have a good source for these for a good price

Olli, what's the spec on these 997 COPs? Output, etc?
Won't they touch the hood with an 8V head?

Olli, not sure those would fit. The 968 valve cover has limited space around the spark plug boot.

I wish I knew what the **** people were talking about in threads like these. I only have anecdotes to offer when I wish I had technical knowledge to contribute. I feel worthless to this board compared to so many of the members who are educated on our cars and know the ins and outs of them...

I dont know about vibration issues. My old cammed out mod motored mustang never dropped one and that motor shook so much that it broke passenger side motor mounts regularly. They are on my LS and I have replaced at least four of them. The major issue that Ford found was that as the coils heat and cool the spring like spiral "plug wire" loses its ability to maintain its original shape when compressed and eventually starts to misfire... just my experience here....

I mean I don't understand most of the technical knowledge that gets tossed around on the board so often.

I suppose i have to make a test before buying those. A friend of mine should have some used ones in his garage.

Most of us have not had any kind of education on these cars. Just take your time, after ten years you know most of what you should know on these classic cars. I have owned my 951 almost 11 years; i am just about middle what comes to knowing it
