Hey all,
theres probably a million threads on this subject, but I did a search and couldnt find anything quickly.

We did a new head job on the engine of my 951 last year.
My mechanic as been using Motul 15w50 since the job.

Before the job, I was using Redline ($$$), can't remember the grade.

On track with the Motul: 20 min. session = a bit more than 1/2 a paint

This is way to much. And looking at the Motul oil, it's like water???

Does anybody have any recommendations on oil. What brand? what grade? affordable price? etc.....

try looking again. the search engine sucks but there are tons of posts on this very subject. covered as many times as the timing chain "upgrade", lol. I use rotella 20-w50 in my car and it works fine.

Oil is a hot topic these days. Modern formulations have much less ZDDP additive, which is some sort of zinc phosphate. Catalyst life is the excuse. One of the critical areas for lubrication is the interface between the cam lobe and follower. Newer engine designs use roller tapets but older designs (like ours) have flat surfaces that have much higher contact pressures.

There are ZDDP additives available and Brad Penn oil comes up a lot on various forums. Do some Googling and get the latest.

I will use Joe Gibbs in my new motor. They have a specific break in oil for the first 500 miles and other oils with more ZDDP than any store bought oil.

VR1 20-50 (or even straight 50 for track) either the dino or synth. Dino can be found on sale for alot less than you have spent on boutique oil in the past.

Rotella 15-40 when its colder.

Just one opinion out of thousands...

VR1 is a good option. I used that last summer and was really impressed with it. I am going to run Brad Penn as I can get it locally for just as cheap as VR1.

i changed to Amsoil 20w50 Z max. it's a hi ZDDP additive formula for flat tappet cams on older cars. the oil pressure is great but a few days after i'm getting a pretty loud click sound from a cam follower i believe. it could be an exhaust leak so i can't blame the oil right for sure yet. the car was from maine and had Amsoil 5w30 in it when i got it and didn't make any noise.

i guess that's not a recommendation, just what i've found recently. the Amsoil Z Max sounds good in theory so maybe it's not the oil causing the noise. i personally prefer synthetic in these super high temperature turbo motors because it just doesn't break down and cook like the dino.

Kendall GT-1. Autozone had it for like $3 a quart one week and I bought every damn bottle. I used VR-1 prior to Kendall and the car seemed to eat a lot more oil with the VR-1 than the Kendall. No real proof, just I topped up a lot less often with the Kendall it seemed.

I just did a deeper research on other threads. I found good things also for the Royal Purple. I also found a distributor 15min. from my place, at a good price (9.50$ each quart if I buy 12).

But I will continue my research for VR-1, see if I can get it in Montreal.
