So I had a post a few weeks ago about a broken tranny. Turns out it was my passenger side axle that broke at the trans. I replaced them both 2 days ago and put about 100 miles on the new pair. Well, I didn't make it home tonight with the car. The new axle on the drivers side broke about 1 mile from home.

I bought these axles from AUTOZONE. Are these axles known to be crap from them? Where should I look to replace them with higher quality? Or did I just get a lemon?

just buy from LR, they have better quality... I work at an Advance Auto honestly for the 951 I don't buy anything there. Since you just bought them get a defect exchange and see if it does it again, could have been a crap batch.

had a set of cardone remans, lasted 8k miles....luckily it was less than a year and got a refund to buy a set of factory axles. also, upgraded trans mount helps...

I guess I am going to exchange the broken one and try a one time replacement. If it breaks again I will ask for my money back and go with LR or another Porsche vendor.

I am wondering if I put them in incorrectly? Did I torque the cheese heads too much? Or maybe I didn't pack the grease in enough?

Maybe I have too much power to them? Somewhere around 350 at the wheels would be too much for stock axles? I don't know.

Is the trans mount good?

If the tranny is moving under load that can break an axle.

Rebuilds don't seem to last on these cars when bought through the usual channels: AutoZone, Advance, even NAPA (though some say they have had good luck with NAPA). If you don't want to be fooling around and changing axles every weekend you need good factory axles or you need to make your next paycheck out to Lindsey Racing.

Damn, did I read that correctly? LR's axles are $600 a piece?

yes, but they are made of gold.

If you're making 400HP, Autozone axles may not be the best choice. If $600 is too much, you shouldn't be making 400HP.

Just out of Curiosity... What do you mean they broke?

One of the actual CV joints?
The axle shaft!?
or did you just shear or lose the cheese head bolts?

I have a spre CV joint (33spline) and a spare driveshaft that I may be able to part with. Both are Porsche/GKN OEM.

As others have said. I would be concerned that something else is causing axles to break not that you are using aftermarket.

+1 - what actually broke?

You can replace the CV joint itself for about $80 per joint with a quality GKN / Loebro unit.

The CV joint broke. Not the axle shaft.

Autozone will have my replacement in tomorrow and maybe it will be fine but I think I know whats causing the failure. The trans mount seems weak. I can easily move the trans about 1 inch from side to side with my hands from underneath and behind the car. I have the LR super or ultra mounts for the engine and I didn't upgrade the trans mount. I plan on getting the new trans mount from LR.

Pain in the *** though to take out the trans. But I am getting good at it now.

yea get a new trans mount.

Also think about doing a trans brace.

Did the joint fail or the bolts holding the joint to the stub axle?

I'm currently doing some CV work on my car; I'll check the 'swing' on my tranny mount; it's new in the last 2 years. I seem to recall it generally moves that amount.
