'87 turbo dies @ 1600 RPM
My car very rarely gives any trouble that I can't diagnose and fix; it's usually something mechanical like leaks or cv joints. Stuff that tells you what is going bad. So, I very rarely post for help; 'search' usually provides the solution. However, last week it started dying at 1600 RPM. It will start right up and idle fine, but die when it hits 1600. Just shut off. No stumbling or back firing. It's intermitent too. I thought it might be something in the AFM so I swapped with a buddy-same problem. It's always at 1600 when it shuts off. Starts right back up and may or may not do it again. When it's running , you can stop and take off and it may or may not shut off. I've checked that ignition wires, intake hoses, fuel pressure, etc.
Any one ever had a similar problem or any suggestions?
Thanks

I had a similar issue. It was very infrequent. Once or twice per 100 miles or so. More regular when engine was cold. I am not 100% certain it is related, but if I discovered while trying to fix problem #1, if I get on it, Overboost protection is triggered consistently somewhere near 4k or 5k rpm's and feels very similar. Engine just dies and you need to cycle the key. Hope yours is the TPS as I don't have a specific answer for you yet.

That was my 1st thought. Had one on my Cherokee that would only idle or run wide open. I'm going to check it w/an ohm meter when it dies and see what I get. Thanks

I put ohm meter on TPS and it checked out OK. This happens at any rpm when it shuts down, even way before boost onset. Then 1600 rpm is all it will do and idle.

See if it will rev past 1600 with the TPS unplugged. Don't drive the car on boost with the TPS unplugged, but if it will rev past 1600 with it unplugged then the TPS is your problem
