This thread never really took off, but maybe there's someone local to you that's got one and will let you borrow it.

I've heard of many people doing it without the tool... maybe I'm paranoid, but it seems to me that $50 for an alignment tool is much better than $$$$ to replace whatever else breaks if the OPRV binds in the housing due to being misaligned. Just my $0.02, but I'd sleep better knowing I'd done it right.

As far as i know it will most probably just leak if you do it wrong and you may have to replace that gasket again .
I had that issue with my first 944 after i put it to the wrong workshop,

I just upgraded the OPRV on my car from the original 3 piece type to the one piece. I bought the tool and it seems to me it is necessary if you use the original 3 piece type but optional if you use the new style. The new style has the piston enclosed so it won't jam from mis-alignment. Just my observation.

I used the tool to align the housing anyway and sold it after the job was done.

Like I said, I might be paranoid... I am the kind of guy who looks up the torque spec for the oil drain plug.. and every other fastener on the car. I call it being thorough... others might call it being ****... those who do might be closer to the truth than I am I just know it would keep me up nights if I didn't use the tool.

I was told to use the one-piece valve as the alignment tool when putting the oil cooler on, so that's what I did.
