OMG! Ihave to re-learn how to shift...
I did my shifter this past weekend with the simple upgrade/repair others have posted about here (sorry, don't have the thread(s) at hand)
The first pic shows what my shifter looked like. Guess that's what 240k miles and 28 years of driving will do...
Second pic is of the well worn shifter connector //9or whatever its called)
And this pic is the job all done.
I literally had to re-learn how to shift! The difference was amazing. Really enjoying shifting once again.

The writeup by V2Rocket_aka944 is here
I also order the parts from McMasterCarr but with shipping the parts came to just shy of $42. MMC doesn't sell the blots & nuts separately therefore you have to purchase 5 bolts and 10 nuts (or something like that) As you only need 1 bolt and 1 nut, if you could source those at your local Ace Hardware you could save a few $$. And www.only944.com will sell you a new shifter for $50 + shipping (if I recall correctly)
It didn't take long to do the job. In fact possibly one of the easier job to do on a 944 et al. I'd be surprised if it took me more than 30 minutes and it was probably more like 20.

I bought all 3 shifting components from Kyle @ 944only.com and to be honest it was worth every penny the short shifter kit and new shifter along with the new shift linkage made my car very enjoyable to drive.

I bought the short shift kit and the shifter arm from Only944 and built my own lever similar to the Only944 piece only because I wanted to use an aftermarket shift **** (weighted, makes a nice difference in feel).
BTW, the 10mm thrust bearings are available from Amazon.com for about $5 and the 10mm bolt and nut is available from the local decent hardware store (even Home Depot has some metric hardware these days).
That said, if you're thinking of pouring polyurethane into your rear transaxle mount, you might as well throw it all into the same order from McMaster-Carr. Its easier to lower the transaxle slightly to replace the rear shifter parts while you're waiting for the polyurethane to cure on the mount.
