Default Motor #4 Comming Out

My street car's motor is coming out again. Two different PO's replaced the motor in this car. I've paid to have one done, now doing one myself.

Put it back in with zippers and velcro so it will come out easier next time.

As your first time what do you think? Any lessons learned?

I am considering doing it myself as well but have some reservations...

Removing the engine, while somewhat intimidating, is not really all that difficult. I can do it in a few hours now. Key is to take your time and be careful.

It's actually my 6th 944 motor extraction. Just the first for this car :O Took me about 6 hours to have it on the floor. The motor has to tip nose low to come off the torque tube. I leave the motor attached to the k-member when it comes out.

The motor was low on compression in #1, pressurized the block enough to blow almost all the oil out in 100 miles highway driving. I am interested to see what let go.

It has an S2 crank, carillo rods, and Mahle pistons. If they are all good I will be putting them up for sale once the motor is torn down.

Broken Ring on #1

Broken Ring on #4, cylinder wall has huge gouge, damage on head looks a lot like the damage on the top of the cylinder.

That should have sounded like small bearings being shaken in a coffee can amplified 100x.

Serious tuning issues.

the statistics are not on our side....

it shouldn't take an engine builder with 'he works miracles man' ability just to make a decent one....

how many blown up engines on this forum? can't say it....

the statistics aren't friendly and by any reasonable meter INDICATE these engines are semi-rebuildable at best.

doesn't matter if the moderator won't allow such posts.... doesn't matter that you can't say it....

can't tell the truth [j.o.g.], even if everyone knows it IS the truth.

even if the posts get deleted and they scream, 'troll' the truth remains....

the long road to ruin hasn't happened in a vacuum. it's all documented here.

the long line of war fatigued.... divorced and dead [moment of silence]....

3.0 w/ low boost can work.... costs a fortune.

but nobody dares to test daily driving and blowing a trillion dollar 3.0 dyno queen up.

lest end up on a suicide watch.

j.o.g.... just over garbage.

it is what it is. and my sincerest condolences.

.

people love these cars.... WE ALL LOVE 'EM.... so, why the hell are so many people gone?

what, for a Golf or BMw?

in a few years, they come back. but, why did they ever leave in the first place?

what car enthusiast experience compares to the 944T???

I fell in love with the 'T' in '87 at my first job site when my co-worker got his.

didn't turn out well for him... but good stuff happens.

but srsly, people have to have blinders on to say the margins aren't narrow.

we have a long history on this forum of builds that didn't well, take... or over time, turn out as planned.

I can't begin to imagine the op's sense of loss.

he deserved better.

od..
bear in mind that big problems are what forums are for...there were 25,000 951s built, even if half of them are gone to lart-heaven, there's only a fraction of the remaining owners on here...many thousands of 951ers are happily enjoying their cars across the land, stock and modified, without issue.

the failures that are documented here that you probably have bookmarked so you can squeal at them before bed are spectacular, but due to an error on the part of the user, tuner or builder, or even a material defect...there is nothing particularly (inherently) unreliable about the 944 series engine, remarkable considering its roots date back to 1971 in the 928 department.

but attempting to take any engine to 200-300% of its design parameters will blow up even the mightiest of pushrodders. how many engines has tonyG blown up, or docwyte, or the others, despite their builds being no-expense-spared exercises in perfection? everything has its limits, and you don't see a whole lot of 1200+hp LS engines out there in proportion to their production numbers.

tuning, that's the key. my recommendation send the block to Sid to be sleeved and built a 2.8L

i'll have to be vigilant.
