Default 924 GTP - 944 LM re-creation

Hi everyone,

3 years ago, we planned to re-create the 924 GTP Le Mans - chassis 006 for the anniversary of the 30 years of the first apparition of this 944 Prototype.

It’s far to be the most impressive Porsche but it was efficient and in advance on its time. First Bosch ECU for Porsche during such a long race, first balancer shafts system and most important for Porsche i think, the possibility to make its own marketing for its new best seller during those hard years in Europe.

The begining of the story is as simple as a google search when my brother found some pictures of the car in action during the mythicals “24 heures du Mans 1981”. And thanks to a customer order we had the chance to start the work.

The objective is not easy because we have to do a car near as a recreation and not only as a “body Replica” for this i have to say “thanks” to Tom T. (Alias TJC) for all his councils and pictures.

Of course the costs will not be the same but it means technical solutions and shell modifications as they had done more than 30 years ago in Weissach. This is what is exciting, do nearly the same job as the guys on this picture. So far from the actual padocks we can see now.

Some links to know and see more about the car :

http://www.deutschnine.com/porsche-t...tr-le-mans.php

http://www.supercars.net/cars/5643.html

http://944turbo.net/?page_id=57

Finally you’ll find here the first results of nearly 1000 hours of work to obtain this result (Mechanical parts included and i’ll try to detail them in other posts). I hope you’ll enjoy it as we enjoy to do the car.

To finish and it should have been my first phrase i have to say sorry for my poor Froggy’s english

Great project and thanks for sharing this. What are you going to do about the twin cam Le Mans head?

Wow! Great job (understatement).

Included me and the original and my own version in accordance with the 944 Challenge Canada regulations.

Hi Patrick,
Thank you for your compliment,
Of course the engine was a huge question because it's THE particularity of the car.
For us, the engine which was not so far from the original was the 2.5 - 16V from the 944 S.

So after some internal modifications to receive the Turbo pressure , we've made some modifications to add a second pulley.

The picture is not really good i'll post some better pics later.

Thank you Charles for your compliment. Very nice car, do you have a post on it ?

No Sorry no thread for this car. It's only a 2.5L race car with 140hp at the wheels... But very fun to drive!

You can see some videos on my youtube channel though.

I'll try to share more pictures of the BBS wheels we'll use and the engine adaptation this week end .

At the present time we're doing the Exhaust manifold design with the turbo adaptation.
I can assure you there is not still so much space in the engine bay when it is inside

Hi guys,

Here some news about the car. As i said you'll find here some pictures of the 2.5 liters engine in the engine bay.

All reinforcements at the same place as the original car. Front frame is ready for all coolers on measurements.

Nothing can work without it. It needs some space

Still have to finalize the adaptation with the air duct and good link when we'll have the exhaust manifold but for now, everything seems to be ok. Hope it'll continu like this.

To finish just because i love them, our BBS wheels center locked

I Hope this post is interesting for you.

Hi Rom

Really nice workmanship!! Very impressive billet hubs. You should post this thread in the 944 turbo forum as you will have a lot more people replying in there.

I was very recently looking at converting my 3.1ltr 8v racemotor to a 16v by using the same head you are using. I've decided against it as I have another 16v project but there was a small question mark on the 2.5L 16v head not being as strong as the 968 16v around the bolt hole area. We did look into a way of improving this particular area.

Look forward to more updates. Again, very impressive build.

hi 333pg333,

Thank you we try to do the best we can.

Can you please give me more informations about this : "the 2.5L 16v head not being as strong as the 968 16v around the bolt hole area" .

what do you mean by this bolt hole area ?

Concerning the forum i've posted on 924 board too. Maybe a 924 here is not prestigious enough

Very nice, how did you go about making the shell with the cage etc, are those engine mounts only used on the gtp?

Hi thingo,

Concerning the shell it has asked us some hours to know the exact reinforcements Porsche's engineers made. It's surprising because it's not symetrical as we could have imagine and you can see this on my last pictures.
For the shell cage we made it on measurements and send to my subcontractor a simple diagram to define its material needs (see here Under)

then we provide him a wire prototype to know the exact bending we needed. The last thing to do was the welding of course. i'll show you later the results as the car is covered for the moment to make the painting.

I'm not sure those engine mounts were used on chassis 006 because i didn't have the chance to see the car in reality but on some pictures, we can see it's coming from casting work. But not sure it's like this in reality. Possibly a presentation model.

But i'm sure this is the same which was used for the adaptation of this engine in the chassis 016 "spirit of Australia" here in picture in Freisinger's workshop.

And i think it's the same one the chassis 005 for sale at Freisinger.
