Question MAF quickie DIY?

It was a slow day at work today so I started to think that: I bet you can make a MAF kit pretty cheap at home. I think the tuners on the list do a great job but the sense of accomplishment doing it yourself might be nice. Soooo, heres the question? What would you need?

I would think a Ford 5.0L MAF sensor would work just fine, they can be had up to 85mm pretty easily, some sort of J-pipe to connect to the air filter and something to massage the signal from the MAF to the DME. It cant really be that simple, can it? Since the price of these kits has gotten so much better I dont think you would save anything just trying to think of some way to DIY it, might be a fun project. Isnt that what these forums are for?

Price for signal conditioner and the means to tune it = $500

That's why they're expensive.

Yeah, it CAN be that simple, but take into consideration the placement of the MAF sensor and the rest of the engineering, plus the r&d (oops, there goes another headgasket!)...

I confess to having the same thoughts...

The four choices currently available are the Link system that Guru, Huntley and SFR sell, the "piggyback unit" that Vitesse sells, the Power Perfect unit that Lindsey sells (this is what I have and I like it well enough) and the ARC2 which is pretty limited compared to the other three listed. I am sure there are others, but these are the ones you are most likely to find.

You should talk with Luke. He's BTDT and can give you all the details.

When TT is ready with his emulator you wont need the signal massager. I don't know if it will be cheaper but you will get a lot more with it.

How much is the Ford 3" MAF at the Ford dealer? I can find Bosch MAFs for Volvo turbo for about SEK 2200 =USD 260. It is possible to dismount and fit into another size pipe if you need.

I am not sure though if you need to make a circuit for clean burning of the wire.

Yes, Been there done that is what I understand Luke has done.

I am sure that there are ways to do this yourself. Finding documented info will be hard though. My guess would be that you will have to step through it. And i would recomend doing so only if you have all the tools you need to correctly monitor the fuel air conditions while setting up the MAF.

I think Pro-Flo MAFS are around $225. Autothority, Technodyne and Lindsey use these units. Not sure about the others.
