Added a clutch master cylinder brace. And a few more items are being replaced as well as some being added.

I bought my '89 last March with a "broken timing belt". At least I didn't pay much.

The engine is nearly ready to install now. Everything is new. I've spent far less on good running cars (like, multiple cars) than what I've got into this rebuild.

I just want to drive it.

Engine will be back in the car soon.

Picked up this 86 a couple weeks ago for a track car project. I raced BMWCCA/NASA when I lived in NJ and have been bitten by the track bug again. Car will undergo a complete overhaul (mechanically). Running the VIN through suncoast decoder, it has the 5R transmission (oil cooler and LSD).

It sat outside for quite a while and once home, decided to see if the paint could be saved. Was able to remove a bunch of oxidation and get some shine back.

Got a couple loose ends to finish up (exhaust, flywheel) but it should be on the road in the next few months.

Ohhh... I saw this car in your shop when I had my alignment done about a month ago.

The colour is perfect!

Nice and very aggressive - love the color.

My project in process, yearly upgrades

Replace all sphericals (timed out)
Replace the exhaust with a side out twin pipe
Modify the flat bottom for quick removal
Hard pipe the brake duct mounts
Replace brake duct tubing
Replace custom spindles (timed out)
Reinforce transmission mounting to prevent twist
Replace spindle boots (ripped due to trans twist we think)

Jim, how are you going to configure the side pipes / flat bottom...assuming ovalised?

We hope to be able to post a few of our own projects in the not too distant future. While we're pushing ahead with the 3.2ltr 16v motor, we're also going to make some changes to the 2.5ltr 8v motor. We were still seeing some over-pressurisation of the coolant and some headlift at higher boost levels. To get the power out of that motor to compete with our opposition we need to run it at 25psi. We're looking at sealing the head and the block off and running split coolant systems to each. Therefore if we have some headlift we won't leak coolant.

Patrick,
Have you played with slightly less ignition timing?
I am of the belief that 944 head lift is purely an over-zealous ignition advance problem, making the chamber pressure too high before the piston even gets to TDC which is what pushes the head off.

Maybe a little more boost and a higher-powered ignition system can compensate? Don't know.

Also re:flat pipes it is very easy to make ovalised pipes if you have access to a hydraulic press and some steel plates...no need to buy the (very expensive) specifically made stuff.

Yes, all the motors get tuned extensively on the dyno and tweaked at the track. From memory we don't run super aggressive timing anyway. The 2.5ltr motor is 9:1 also fwiw. Running ign well capable of the job.

Ha, yes, just squash the damn pipes! I like the look of those really flat pipes but that is probably just the outlet poking out the side. For this sort of application I would think coming off the turbo round then into a flattened e.g. 8" wide by 2" high sort of thing. You'd just have to calculate the area to match whatever size round exhaust you would run ordinarily for this application. I remember some years ago before Rod did his Uber 968, he started a project with that original car and the shop made up a highly customised turbo, header, exhaust setup. Part pic here.

Would love to see someone modify the 8v combustion chamber to a more "heart shape" like the GM L31 Vortec heads...fast burn design means you can take 4-6 degrees of timing out vs the earlier non-Vortec open chamber (very similar to the 944 head).

What's another grand or two at this point for your experiments?

The biggest problem still remains the spacing of the headstuds. Hope that the 3.2ltr doesn't need as much boost (clearly it shouldn't) and we don't have to worry about headlift etc... :-)
