964 C4 vs Vauxhall Corsa 1.4
OK - I know it's not a comparison most people are interested in, but I borrowed by girlfriends car this morning and I think it's the first time I've driven a different car since I bought my 964 just over 2 years ago. And who knows - someone out there might be thinking "Corsa.... or 964.... which shall I buy????".
So - how does it compare to my 14 year old Porsche?
Well - first impressions on a straight road were not too bad. It takes aaaaages to reach 60mph, but then it is only a 1.4. But at "town" speeds it's actually quite good. Brakes are susprisingly good (although I know she has just had them all replaced so they are brand new). There is absolutely instant stopping power and it feels like it stops very quickly - in fact, I have felt that my brakes have not been up to scratch for the last few months and this confirms it - I suspect the Corsa could out brake me, which it most definitely shouldn't be able to. I think my ABS is a bit keen again - nothing like it used to be, but still maybe need to take it back to JZM to check or maybe find a local C4 to compare it with?
Anyway, back to the Corsa. The first time I tried to go round a corner at more than walking speed - oh my god! You think C4s understeer?????? These things just run soooooo wide! I wasn't going quickly - I know it's not a sports car - but it just doesn't turn in. How do people drive these things?
The upside - a trip to work probably usually costs me £5 in petrol, and in the corsa I suspect it cost me 20p.
The downside - since I used the Corsa, my girlfriend will be using my car later today......... I am a bit nervous - wish me luck!
And the summary is of course - I won't be trading my 964 in for a Corsa!

Dave,
Interesting comparison, but I thought your girlfriend had an Escort? Ahh, this is another girlfriend?? Latest model and all, huh?
You really want a MINI mate..

No - Escort girl isn't a girlfriend, just a friend. Although she doesn't seem to be entirely happy with the fact that I am now dating the girl who owns the Corsa.
The girlfriend has the big advantage that she absolutely loves 911s (her favourite car ever), and loves motorbikes. The only small negative point is - she is a police woman! But - fortunately she doesn't work in traffic, so although she didn't look terribly happy when I mentioned 160mph jaunts up the M3 last week, she at least won't arrest me for it!
I suspect minis do corner better than corsas. But then, so does my push bike....

Just goes to show, all these town cars are the same :
My girlfriend just phoned to tell me she loves my car. I told her not to get used to it because she'd be driving her Corsa again tomorrow. At which point, she told me she doesn't own a Corsa - she owns a Renault Clio.
Oops! Guess the title of this thread is wrong!

Dave, a Clio is waaaaay better than a Corsa. You don't know how lucky you are to have missed having to drive one of those!
The Mini is the one to go for, though.

For the Corsa to compete you need :-
a) size of wheels - at least 20"
b) number of and size of spoilers - minimum 2 standing at least 18" high
c) size of exhaust outlet - minimum 6" pref. 3 off
d) body colour - Metal flake pink
c) tinted windows
now if this is the case the 964 is no contest.
Richard
P.S. 1.4 engine size is too big should be 1.0L

"Deja-VU"........
I let Jen borrow my 993 for the day when I got it running just over a week ago (I sold my '87 911 for MORE then the 993 - so, OK, the 993 has some "issues" - but damn - how many 993s can you find for less money then an '87 911!!! ). Anyway - I had a similiar phone call when she got to work. And, since that call.....
In less then a week, my "garage" has changed significantly... My track car was put up for sale - and has been sold. Jen's classic '68 911L has a serious buyer - and last night, from the proceeds of the previous cars, an '89 964 C4 rested it's first night in our garage. Jen's new car...
Get ready.... BTDT..!!

Interesting comparison. Now you have me tempted to write a comparison of my RS America with my old 1980 Volkswagon Rabbit (Golf) Diesel.... makes for quite a comparison.

Also - robmug - you bet..!!! When I get some pics (which may be difficult - as during waking hours, Jen is either going to work in it, coming home with it - or headed out to "just drive it"), BUT - I'll try to catch a few during dinner.. If I'm successful - I'll (or she - if she isn't driving somewhere ) will start a new thread with details, pics - and all of you can relish telling us what needs to be fixed until it breaks!!!!
