Default Frunk pull surround in footwell - clearly missing parts!

dumb post.

if I look at the catalogue pics it shows the cover being held on with 2 M6 x 16mm pan head screws which screw into the latch unit themselves...

the trouble is I have nothing for them to locate into on my car just a brass bush with a hole in larger than m6 with no thread...

anyone know now what I’m meant to have or got a pic?... The catalogue doesn’t show anything.

Annoyingly it it was all screwed back nicely before it went into the body shop.... 🙄

Don't panic. As soon as I can get my photos posted you can see what's up.

This frunk handle is RHD but the concept will be the same.

The frame side which goes against the body has two ferrules with no thread. The screws screw into the body with the ferrules providing the strength so the plastic doesn’t crack.

Directly above those ferrules are a set of threaded ferrules. Those take the screws that hold the cover to the frame sandwiching the carpet between them.

The frame has a pin that holds the lever in.

The lever has a pin that holds the cable in

The threaded ferrule is too small to allow the hex key to go through it and reach the inner screw. One screw can be undone by pulling the lever open and inserting a short hex key. The other one can’t.

To reach the other one, reinsert the screw and push. The ferrule will back out and give you clear access to the lower screw. Refit the ferrule afterwards. A stupid design. The earlier ones had a plastic insert on the outer frame and it was easy to remove this to undo the hidden screws. Good luck

Thanks man. I basically either have worn / broken ferrules as mine just look like a brass ring with no thread which the Allen key will pass through!... bloody body shop...

the catalogue doesn’t list them... Anyone know if there’s a part number or is it a case of a new drunk pull part?.

Cheers.

Early cars had a different cover which had and expanding plastic inserts, and screws not bolts. As far as I am aware you can no longer buy the old style, and all new covers are the revised bolted ones

I used a piece of wire to fish the outside brass piece back in one I had the inside ones tighten up. Truly not a well thought out design

i can only see 2 locations that need ferrules to hold the outer cover on. These 2 positions have nothing but a brass ring lining the hole. No thread.

if I can’t get the ferrules perhaps I’ll try cut a rivnut down and insert it.

Thanks

Hehe this is like chinese whispers now!!

So there is an outer cover that holds the carpet that attaches to 2 points on the trunk pull surround as per the excellent pics above. Those 2 holes where the allen key goes through to reach the rear holes that attach that surround to the car are the ones with removable brass ferrules :-). They're the ones i don't have! Or rather it looks like they are fubared!

It looks like i've got no chance getting those parts so i'll have to freestyle a thread in there...

Thanks for all the info lads

Is is possible the body shop couldn't work out how to undo the body screws so they drilled out the threaded ferrules to get to the body screws with a hex key?

That sound reasonable maybe the op could tap out the brass pieces on the out side got a slightly lager screw

Good idea. Makes you wonder why Porsche chose to make both screws the same size, or why they changed the earlier design? The part I pictured is a 993 number.
