Continental ExtremeContact Sport or Michelin Pilot Sport PS2
Age old question. The PS2's are considerably more expensive and Tire Rack actually recommended the Conti's. I am in LA and the 964 is my daily. I never track this car. Any opinions?

I just put the Contis in my car. I will report back once I've had a chance to drive it.

I've been pleased with the Continentals. The PS2 is an older design, and while the new Pilot Sport 4S is a slightly better tire than the Continental Extreme Contact Sport, it's not available in 964 sizing.
I might consider the the Sport Cup 2 next time, but they're twice the price.

Have had Contis on my 964 a long time and can recommend them! Great grip dry and moist [all we have here in SoCal] , smooth and quiet riding !!

I’m running the PS2’s on mine and absolutely love them. Amazing amounts of grip, very predictable in the corners and an overall smooth running tire.
I agree that they are an older design and I’m surprised they are still producing them but overall if I had to do it again I would by the same or PS4 if they are available.

There are many 993 OWNERS Running 18's with Bilsteins who have an ongoing debate about lumpy bumpy city drives due to lowsy roads.
The alternative is to switch to stock 17 wheels and switch from Michelins to different rubber.
Those 964 drivers here, are your cars running 17's?
If so, do the PS2's provide a smooth ride on 17's?
I am thinking switch to Conti Extreme's due to what I think is too tough a sidewall on Michelin's

Has anyone tried the new Sumitomo HTR Z5? They come in 17" sizes for the 964. It seems like 993 and 996TT users have been pretty happy with the previous ZIIIs in the past, but wondered if anyone has tried the newer versions. For a street tire, I think they'll be plenty sticky, and they are significantly cheaper than either the Contis or PS2.
Plus, there's a $50 mail-in rebate and free shipping from Tire Rack, which puts a set delivered to your door for under $350-370 depending on whether you want to go with 205s or 225s up front.

I have the n spec PS2's on cup 1's right now for about 11-12k miles and they've been damn good. I've run PS2's on other cars a decade and change ago, and they never lasted this long. That said I have those conti's on my wifes car for about 5 months now and I have to say I'm extremely impressed. Especially for the price delta.
Cup Sport 2s are out for delivery for the new wheels today, so I can report back on those in a couple of weeks

I have a set of Conti Extreme Contact Sports on my '92 C2 Cab. They completely transformed the car from the Goodyear F1's which were on the car when I bought it 4 years ago. Great grip, good ride, much less road noise. Only complaint is the wear rate of the rears--maybe the driver's foot is the culprit???

I prefer the Contis over the Michelins. Tried both on the 964, I would not go with PS2 anymore... the world moved on.
Last year I tried the PS2 on my Cayman R, I was very, very disappointed. When my 997 was new, I was relatively happy with them, but only used them a few months each time as I tracked the car. But when I stopped tracking the 997 I realized they don't do well when they age.
Today, the PS does not offer a good package of performance/comfort/life/price anymore.
On the 964 the best tires have been the Contis. Currently on Toyos... that are very average.

IMO
PS2 --Great tire The best of the best when they first came out.
Conti -- Slightly better but not as quiet
Super sports -- a tad better yet
S4s's -- by far the best and IMO don't have the longevity but have better grip than some of the R compounds of just 5 years ago
Not one of them is a bad tire in any way and you should be happy with any.

The Contis (dws06 and the current extremecontact) use a softer sidewall and feel a little too squishy to me. On an 18” wheel, they would likely be perfect. On a 17”, I’m not a fan. My opinion though. They are very quiet and offer a nice ride (because... soft sidewalls), and definitely grip pretty well. I haven’t tried out the AS3 but I’ve heard rave reviews from more than a few tire savvy folks. With SoCal grooved highways, a soft sidewall might induce some unnerving steering, but a stiff sidewall will transmit a lot more pavement noise. Always a tradeoff!
