Default Steering rack from Vertex

Hi,

I am poised with a leaky steering rack and I am looking at this rebuild unit from Vertex: https://www.vertexauto.com/porsche-9...ck-p-7897.aspx

Is that a reputable place and a correct price?

I will have it installed by TC Design in Campbell since they are doing my KW install at the end of the month (super super excited with that).

Thanks a lot!

10 years ago, my steering rack started to leak and I replaced it with a rebuilt unit from Vertex. It has worked very well. I also bought a rebuilt transmission from them with less than favorable results, so my overall opinion of Vertex is mixed.

I bought all the seals in a kit a couple years ago. Just need to take it off and find a shop that rebuilds them. Cost $60 from the UK.

I purchased a steering rack from Vertex 10 years ago. No problems.

Do you remember which shop?
For 60 USD I may just buy a kit and keep it just in case.

Rack doctor has rebuilt racks for $300. I’m pretty sure I got mine from there last year. It’s worked perfectly.

Thanks everyone! Having it rebuilt by a shop here is not really an option, I would need to find one, coordinate a drop-off / pickup and have it aligned with the other shop I am working with.

I emailed Vertex asking them about the price difference with Rack Doctor, no answer so far so I might go with the cheapest option

Alas, it's been 8000 miles and less than 4 years for my rebuilt rack (from Rack Doctor) and it is leaking. According to a few posts I've seen, it looks like they are not in business anymore - or at least not responding - so any warranty is probably moot.

A friend had his rebuilt by vertex and it failed within a month and 5k miles. They replaced it for free but he had to pay for the labor of doing so. You can buy rebuild kits. It is a bit more complicated than most DIY projects but can be done. I would not use their exchange program only have yours rebuilt. The rack he got looked like someone dunked it in crinkle paint. Too bad ZF no longer rebuilds this in the US.

You can send it back to Rack Doctor, they're still around, but I was quoted 24hr for warranty work on my failed rack and they had it for 2 months and almost never answer the phone. Would recommend sending it elsewhere and paying to have it done right.

Probably not helpful to the OP but I just installed this manual rack and haven't looked back.

Had mine replaced about a month ago. Bought a refurb from this shop: https://advantagesteering.com/1992-1...emanufactured/

Cost for the part was $745 after the core charge was returned.

Thanks everyone for your input, I don't want to risk sending it back to Rack Doctor and wait forever. I'll most likely be going with Advantage Steering if the leak becomes problematic

I did this too and have been happy with it since 2021!
