Oil Pressure Sender Faulty?
The warning light on the oil pressure came on today. Needle is between 0-1 and does not move after a nice drive around town. Car runs fine as far as I can hear. Is the fault the sender unit or could it be something else?
About two weeks ago, I had the oil cooler and both oil lines to the cooler replaced.
Thanks for the help. Ron

Hmm. I thought no signal would peg the meter. Does on earlier cars. It’s possible the sender got clogged up?
is the front oil cooler getting warm? You motor temp looks ok
is oil level looks very high, should be no higher than 3 o clock but that won’t cause what you’re seeing.
id really be a little worried driving it until you can verify pressure. The sender is under the i take manifold center near the Back.

Thanks Spyerx for the reply and link. Here's the oil pressure this morning. Idles round 2-3 and goes to about 4 when revved. It's a short distance to the shop where they replaced the oil cooler and lines. I'll drop it off and ask them to investigate.

Agree with crg53. Your oil level is over halfway up while the engine is still cold, and pegged when hot. That is way too much oil.
The oil level should be about halfway when hot, not cold.

So that pressure range when cold is ok but a bit low. Did you warm it up and check pressures? I’m leaning to a faulty sender... but best to check

Overfill caused the pressure issue? Is pressure ok now?

Well, picked up the car on the way home, the oil pressure light came on when I slowed down for a light. The needle dropped down to 1. Oil level climbed to about half way. Cleared the warning light and drove hard. Oil pressure climbed to 5 as expected and stayed around 4-5 at 50mph,. Slowed down for another light and the oil pressure light came on. Pressure dropped down to 1.
Drove it back to the shop. I suppose next is to check this oil pressure sender. So odd that this didn't happen until after the oil cooler and oil lines were replaced. is there a relationship?
Thanks, Ron

what kind of oil did the shop put in the car?
Do these guys know 964?
The 964 uses a dry sump system. That means the tank is separate from the sump for oil. Unless the take is very low oil pressure shouldn't change. I'm unsure if 'high' but if VERY high you could see some issues, but low pressure isn't one I'd suspect.
These cars, when in a good state of tune, run 1-2 at warm idle (engine temp at about 8 o'clock on dial) and should hit 5 over about 3k RPM when warmed up.
It would be good for the shop to put a manual/dial gauge on the engine and validate the numbers.

The shop is going to put a mechanical gauge on to check the actual pressure as the first step. This is an exclusive Porsche shop. They restore and rebuild and know air-cools.
thanks for the info.
