Default Power steering - going electric!

1991 C2
after completing the manual conversion I am now right in the middle of a full engine rebuild (long story for anther time....). We have had the cams reground from blanks, and I decided to do away with the cam-driven power steering pump. Mine leaked, and there is a lot of wasted pipe going from the back to the front. Hopefully will get a small HP gain also.

I am using a Toyota MR2 electric hydraulic power steering pump. The drift guys use this pump and it seems bullet proof. I have mounted it in the frunk, about 12 inches from the steering rack and drilled holes in the body shell so the pipes can access the steering rack.

I will post on progress, but first a question - can anyone confirm which is the pressure line hole in the steering rack, and which is the return hole? I took the lines out when I did the manual conversion, and now I cant remember which hole is which! I read the PET, but want to make sure as it shows the LHD when mine is RHD. Can anyone help?

Bottom port is pressure line. Top port is return (soft line).

Thanks!

I just noticed you were asking about RHD. I saw the RHD steering gear only in illustrations. It does look different, but the principles of feed and return lines should be the same in relation to the internal input shaft. Bottom feed, top return. Alternatively you can take a look at your old feed line and how it mounts to the body. From there you will be able to deduct which port on the rack it will connect to.

Thanks!
Andrew

Thanks Andrew, but the lines were thrown out, which is why I am asking for help. Pretty sure the set up will be the same, with the pressure line going in the lower hole, but I am not getting any assistance from the power steering.

Depends on which pump, but it's a range based on load... 5-60amps

Hi there - Rob and My 964 'trigger' thread both cover this for RHD - I used the Merc A1 pump so search that too

I've used a TRW Opel Zafira pump in my mk2 Golf. Great feel and has load sensor so only runs when needed.
