Default general 964 reliability

Hi all,

As I consider jumping in here with a 964, for a driver quality car, is this generation typically a reliable driver? What are the common things that leave you on the side of the road or in a parking lot with no start troubles? I'm not thinking of the pesky oil leaks or serious head bolt issues. I'm thinking of the lesser discussed common things you all run into. Would you put your daughter into a 964 for daily commuting? If it were a reasonably well cared for used car?

I've had mine for just over 5 years and had only been stranded once because of a bad flywheel speed sensor. Other than regular maintenance and gas there is nothing I have to do to get out and drive this car every day.
There is the little issue with a small battery drain that seems common with these cars. So I've gotten into the habit of plugging in a tender nearly every day.
But, like any car, if you keep it maintained it will be dependable.

Would I let my daughters drive it? Sure, but like many young people their age, they don't really like driving. Not like I do.

The only thing that comes to mind as a common issue is the DME relay. Keep a spare in the glove box, you may never need it.
The HVAC servos are known to fail, but they won't leave you stranded, just too hot or cold...

928.116.145.03 will leave you stranded and calling a flatbed.

Ha, that's true. The two failures I've seen that really stranded a 964 were a failed DME and a failed shift bushing.

Very reliable cars, Aircooled 911's are some of the most reliable cars out there, you could drive a 964 across country as long as its been sorted out & looked after.

THIS

I did a 2000 mile trip a few years ago and had zero issues with the car and a large part of that trip was high speed canyon roads.

Get a good example, go through it to fix any issues, maintain and enjoy.

In 6 1/2 years, the DME relay’s popped once in the driveway(lucky), and that’s basically it. She’s been trusty as anything, and called up to daily duty on several occasions while my X5 was liking the jack stands...

Since it made me beg my wife to borrow her Z4 on Tuesday... battery drains are relatively common. A lot of 964 owners use them as second (third, forth, tenth) cars and keep them indoors on tenders. To those of us who park um outside and use um daily... you have to check a few little things like the door switches and failed relays or climate control units that can cause a parasitic drain. Not expensive or rocket science but it'll leave you frustrated when the battery is dead.

They don't break. Just buy one, sort it out and drive it every day. Mine was an only car daily for 10 years. Broke the roll pin a couple times. Dme relay failed once. And not much else happened that wasn't expected. My daughter was 4 when i bought it. She grew up in the back seat, road trips and all. When we strapped the Christmas tree to the top, Instagram wasn't yet existing, so it was because we needed to get the tree home. Three bikes on the roof when the start point was far away. Bungee cord the hood down when too much was in the trunk. Drove it broke it fixed it drove it again...bottom line it was the best daily I've ever had until i decided last year to buy the 996,which i don't like nearly as much. But can't pass up a good deal to beat on something else. I can guarantee you more will go wrong w the 996 than ever went wrong with the 964.

Now- all that said- don't daily an old Porsche unless you are doing all the work yourself. If you plan on using shops, it would be cheaper to buy a pre-owned w a warrantee. Just sayin.

Well then good. I won't expect to see you put a Christmas tree on your car for the sole purpose of showing me the picture.
