Leaking Steering Rack
My steering rack is leaking....the prices on the new ones are mind blowing! Anyone have a good solution (aside from the rackdoctor, who I had a terrible experience with?)
Any guidance appreciated!!

I am facing the same problem and am planning on installing the seal kit from KLA but so far I have not found a single DIY article specific to the 964. I am told it is the same as the 993, but is it really? Seal kits for 993's have a different part number.
To complicate matters, from 1992 onwards, Porsche substantially changed the design of the rack going with a rotary control valve instead of a piston valve. If anyone knows of a DIY article on replacing the steering rack seals on a 964 or even photos or a diagram of steering rack internal parts, could you please share?

Since you’re in SoCal call these guys ask if they can rebuild it. They specialize in cv and racks
jb auto repair
1 (714) 954-0507
many many shops use them to service axles. Most of their work is commercial.

The 964 seals are almost identical to the 993. As I recall, the KLA kit contains all of the needed 964 seals. The rebuild process is identical for both racks. Once apart, just replace the seals like-for-like. *Note carefully the orientation of the seals. The only difficulty is getting the snap ring out, but it does prise out with some small flat screwdrivers/picks.

I'm in the process of replacing my rack. I was able to source a rebuilt rack from EBS Racing. I should have the car back in the road in a couple weeks to determine how well they did.

Efren does some really great work on steering rack rebuilds. Not certain if he will do 964s (but I imagine he will), you can contact him through instagram: https://www.instagram.com/efrenporsche/?hl=en

I also went the rebuilt route primarily because my shop wouldn’t guarantee the work otherwise. Fortunately mine was discovered when the front end was apart for suspension rebuild so part of the labor was already done.
WYAT I would replace the steering rack retention bushings too.

Around 10 years ago, I had the car inspected for an upcoming DE at the Glen. The shop found that the rack was leaking and the boot was ripped. Since I only had 2 weeks to fix it, I ordered the boot and quickly installed it. Since I did not have time to rebuild the rack, I took some temporary action.
Got a bottle of LUCAS trans / power steering stop leak and filled up the P.S. reservoir. The leak stopped and I went to the Glen!
OH....never had to do anything to the rack to date!!!

They rebuilt my rack for like $300. It was a couple years ago and seem to have done a good job. I took it out of the car and took it to them. I didnt say what it was out of, just said i had a ZF rack that needed to be rebuilt.

I will second the Lucas power steering stop leak suggestion. I tried it about 10 years ago as well, and my 964 rack hasn't leaked a drop since! I think it swells the seals in the rack and really works great.

Looks like I need to have my rack rebuilt, does anybody have any other recommendations besides the shop in SoCal that was recommended above? Thanks!
