Default Difficulty engaging 1st and 2nd when hot

My 964 gearbox feels pretty good when cold and warm but after about 30 mins of driving engaging both 1st and 2nd becomes quite difficult, helped by blipping the throttle. Am I right to assume this is worn synchros?

if so, what would a ballpark cost be to fix it (in in the UK fwiw) and what else should I be getting done “while you are in there” (the car is mechanically standard, 158k miles)? The clutch is also pretty stiff - if that’s a sign of anything.

Is it a C2 or C4?

When the transmission is hot and difficult to engage in 1st or 2nd, turn the engine off and can you go into those gears easily? If yes, then I suspect its time to renew your clutch. But before changing the clutch, when is the last time you bled the clutch hydraulics?

If the transmission is stiff even with the engine is off, then the wear is inside the tranny.

That was my thought as well as my box shifts better with my all new clutch and DMF. The only rider to that is whether he would be in for two engine drops if it’s not just the clutch. A C2 would be easier as just the trans to drop.

It’s a C2. And it shifts easily with the engine off.

when it’s got it almost feels like there is a physical barrier to engaging a gear, rather than it being stiff through a range of movement, if that makes sense.

I’m going to bleed the clutch to see if that helps.

Thanks all.

Sounds like you have a clutch issue which is a lot cheaper to fix. In addition to bleeding the clutch, also check your clutch pedal roll pin. How much play does the pedal have at the top of the travel? Is it more than 1 inch? If should be approx 3/4 inch.

When was the last time you changed the transmission fluid? If the fluid is old the viscosity will drop off when heated which would prevent the synchros from properly functioning. I would definitely start with the low hanging fruit first before jumping into transmission/clutch etc.

Had a similar issue long time back - low gears difficult to engage when warmed up. Bled the clutch slave cyl above the trans box - bled around a pint of fluid before it became all clear. Once done gear selection woes all over. Hope this fixes your problem BillyB

Also check your engine mounts, if they are sagging that could contribute to hard shifting.

this can happen if the pressure plate isn't fully disengaging and just kissing the clutch/flywheel, will bind enough to make it hard to shift.
