I don't have permission to post the pics, but your comments on the fender slope is a good one. I'm not versed enough on the tails to know much, but it does say "Porsche" across the middle light. Fender slope says 964.

It's a funny situation for sure. This is not a motivated seller by any means.

Really bizarre and I kept thinking about those "I am a foreign prince with a vast unclaimed fortune I'd like to send you" emails. I guess I'd offer $20K and clarify the offer could grow much higher if the seller/sellers rep. will allow you to see the car in person (possibly test drive it if running?) and give you more details.

I believe Singer wants a clean, accident free, rust free chassis. I know 10 years ago they were paying $20k sight unseen so I would say $50k is a realistic number if it met the criteria. It would be really easy for us to tell what it is with the pics.

as other have said there are simply way too many unknowns here. Even floating a verbal price to them is kind of meaningless based on your 2 photos. It’s not fair to then or to you. Now if you are prompting the offer that’s another story I guess.

Can they tell you the last time the car was run?

it also depends on what you are looking for. Are you looking for a massive project ? If so this could be one. If you haven’t already you might want to read Scott’s thread here on buying a neglected 964Turbo. It might just scare the crap out of you! Or might motivate you!

Since the car is local why not volunteer to help with the house clean up/out and see if you get a chance to meet the owner. Maybe if you can start a conversation about the car he might offer to sell it to you. Folks get very touchy about getting rid of their stuff when they think no one wants it or cares about what it meant to them. That said - 8 years ago I bought a 964 Targa out of a parking lot that had been sitting outside in Chicago weather for 3 years and hadn't been registered since 2000. I had the advantage of being able to look at the car but I also already knew the car didn't run and had 40% leak down on one cylinder (turned out to be a broken head stud). In addition - the car had been broken into and had interior damage and had a $3000 diagnostic and storage bill against it. The rear bumper was missing paint and there was a small bubble at the bottom of the windshield and dime sized paint chip on the top of the windshield frame, Tires were dated in the '90's and it had a couple gallons of sludge in the gas tank. Engine did not turn over. I bought it and poked at it here and there for 6 more years while it sat in my garage. Two years ago I turned that car into this:

I spent about $20,000, allot of my time, and got pretty lucky on how it cleaned up. The year before I jumped into fixing it I almost sold it to Oklahoma Foreign for $6000. I won't say what I paid for the car because it was 8 years ago and those days for 964's are really gone forever. I say go for it. Get creative about how. . I did a Rennlist thread on my rebuild and how/where I found some stuff for cheap but I really got lucky several times. Good luck

Just a note - a Singer Targa sold last month on BaT for $1.1m. The original car had a fire on the Carfax so . . . .

not looking to start a Singer vs Purist 964 debate, but am I alone in wishing they would just move on to developing other platforms? They've contributed significantly to a barrier to entry for the 964 market for many prospective buyers. I was fortunate enough to get in 1.5 years ago, and I'm glad I did, otherwise there is no chance I would ever want to plunk $100K + on my dream car.

Just my $0.02

Thanks all. Good posts. Love the jpoint resurrection; absolutely aspirational.
To answer some questions:
Owner really is not in a condition to be answering questions. Family doesn't really know much about the car. Best I can hope for is about 10 minutes with the car before making an offer.
Efforts to get a VIN are on-going - Neighbor/friend who is involved is not a car guy at all and could not find the VIN on the dash/pillar (where is the VIN - where else is a VIN?)

As for the direction I will go, I'll like try to restore the car if it is not destroyed by rust underneath. The body work will need to be farmed out, but I'm pretty capable and should be able to address anything mechanical.

Two potential downsides are that I might overpay for a rusty parts car, and if I get this I will likely need to sell one of my Sciroccos, which I really really don't want to do.

As for singer, I'm surprised that they aren't into the 993s yet...although it's not like those cars need any help appreciating either these days.

word of advice (from someone you've never met!). Don't sell the Sciroccos, you will never be able to replace them. I speak to you as a guy with a family of 3 corrados at home. 1 is a rust bucket that needs a full resto. 1 is a immaculate 1995 airbag car, all original, and the other is my summer daily 1993 Alpine White VR6.

I sold a beautiful all original 1.6TD MK2 Jetta Coupe that I turned from a heap into an awesome daily driver in order to "justify" my 964 purchase, and although I'd still do that tradeoff today, I still regret having to sell that car.

I absolutely love my 964, but I will never ever get rid of any of the Corrados, not even if it meant keeping the 964.

This is definitely a concern. Ironic that it's harder to find a good clean Scirocco or Corrado than a 964....well maybe not ironic, but odd.

That white car is gorgeous. Those wheels look almost factory on it.

I have the three Sciroccos now.
1980 restromod with 2002 GTI 1.8t swap and working AC (very proud that I was able to retain/repair the AC). About 250 HP in a 1700 lb car on 175/70/13 tires. Scary fun.
1981 S that is all original except for the annoying aftermarket cheapie pop-up sunroof. I love this car but detest the sunroof. This would be the one to go if I had to part with one.
1993 grey market GT II that someone else went to the trouble of importing a few years ago, then decided that he like an old MINI better.

Could have been an engine fire that had zero effect on the chassis.

$15k. It will likely end up costing you at least $60. I’ve owned 8 antiques. It’s always less expensive to start with a well maintained car.

I'd tell them that you obviously need to see it but $20k if everything checks out. You can back out once you see it - but understand, unless there was a fire or the case is damaged, the parts alone will sell for that, so your risk can be managed.

I used to own the same 1981 Scirocco S (Cosmic Silver Metallic) in college. Loved that car! My wife had a 1986 Scirocco 16V (Mars Red). Does your 1981 Scirocco S have the black cloth with orange/red striped interior?
