Default using PVC plumbers tape on Oil linbe unions?

Hey all,

I am just rebuilding the Oil thermostate and solid lines to the cooler and have removed all the unions to replace the washers.

Quesstion is, can you use PVC plumbers tape around the unions before. you screw them back onto the body of the Cooler and Thermostate?
Or just fit them back with only a new washer?
I would just like to make it be easier to remove them If I have to in the future or for the next person.

Cheers

Alex

Why would you?
Sealing is done at the seat, not at the threads like a NPT fitting.
IMO, using PVC tape screams "I'm a hack and I don't know what I'm doing", so don't do it.

+1 - No need for sealing tape. Just make sure the fitting is clean when you assemble and it should be fine.

Hey,

Cheers for replying and only reason I asked was that I had seen some pictures with what looked like white coming from the Union which I thought was strange.

Just a quick one, but when fitting the rubber O-ring is it a good idea to put a smear of grease on it then fit the cap?
It such a PITA to get off and thoght maybe if I need to take the thing apart it would make my job easier..

Cheers
Alex

I'm not clear on what o-ring you are referring to. Can you clarify? None of the oil line connections have o-rings. Are you talking about the o-ring inside the thermostat? If yes, I always use silicone grease on all o-rings. O-rings need to be able to move to seal properly.
