1992 Carrera RS Transmission Noise
Hello everyone:
Today I drove my 1992 Carrera RS for the first time with 45,000 kms (28,000 miles) on the speedometer and I heard a noise in the transmission that my 911 RS America with 82,000 miles does not have, it doesn't sound serious, but I hear the gears turning, it's not a bearing noise, it is not a noise from the clutch bearing.
Does anyone here know if that noise is normal?

when does the noise occurs? during driving on gear, idle on neutral, idle when clutch pedal is down, upon release? and when does it go away? do you have factory set up or modded?

This noise is perfectly normal, and well documented. The RS comes with a single mass lightweight flywheel. The standard 964 has a dual mass flywheel. There are many threads here about the transmission noise from the lightweight flywheel. I have this in my 964 with no insulation and it sounds a bit like rocks jumbling around. The noise should go away when you depress the clutch. It’s a small price to pay for livelier shifting, and weight reduction where it counts.

During driving in any gear, it disappears when push the clutch and come back when release it. But doesn't hears like when the clutch bearing is wrong.

Pancho, I just downloaded a video onto YouTube. Note how the noise cuts out when the clutch is depressed. I’m told the sound is from gears spinning freely in the case.

As when you engage the clutch the springs are compressed so would stop rattling, just a guess?

Doesn’t the RS have a close ratio transmission? If so, it could just be the sound of the closer ratio gears meshing. My close ratio 6 speed gears whine a bit. At any rate, the only thing to do is just to keep driving it, and pay attention if the noise gets worse or stay the same.
