Default Porsche sure has us in a pickle...

This roof skin was not $6-8k the last time I checked. It seems they know what parts are desirable from a hotrod standpoint and are marking them up like crazy.
1989-1994 Porsche 911 Roof Assembly 964-503-087-00-GRV | Sunset Porsche Parts

Also remember 993 RS uprights were $1200 a pair which was already a little expensive...now are close to $4k.

They keep this up, I'll be switching to Miatas

OEM motor mounts also ridiculously priced now.
I sure hope it’s not an effort to sway us to buy a new car….nothing newer than 1998 for me. Maybe they need to look into rebuilding the old cars the way Aston, Jag, Nissan have done.

Hi hear what you’re saying, but keeping old tools a float covered by small volumes is expensive as well.

Agree - but it's making room for a small company like BBi to come in and make aftermarket uprights and still make a profit. Seems like some inefficiencies at work there or maybe they are so big, the overhead to do anytthing at all is too much.

I think the issue is more storage :-)

I didn't cut my roof, we hand formed and welded in a panel. It's a lot of work, but I felt better keeping the factory welds in tact on the roof.

The dirty secret is porsche doesn't make most of this stuff. 3rd parties like Dansk do. A friend ordered a fender for a long long hood from the dealer, it arrived with a porsche label/stamp, made by dansk. Unfortunately they don't make the roof skin for the 964 it seems.

Links to the full catalog: http://catalogue.jpgroup.dk/pdf/P993-P964_159_en.pdf

However they do make it for the 3.2 cars... question is, can you retrofit, or cut out the parts you need and weld in :-)

That part is about $3k

here is an old thread on the topic:

All Porsche parts prices have gone through the roof and many aren't available at any price

My most recent adventure in this area was a drive gear for an '84 915 transmission cooler pump, oe Porsche hasn't been available for years. There are aftermarket copies available in Europe but none of the venders wanted to ship to the US, Finally found a friendly parts guy in Holland that mailed one to me.

rebuilt one of my 993 engines last summer, prices were eye watering.

Going on a large restaurantion and looking at price parts for nearly 3 years.
Here in Europe prices have gone up the last year by about 20%.
But there is a large second hand parts market.

I get it - inflation is upon us. The stuff I'm looking at is 100-300% higher. O well - pay to play I guess. Hard to swallow when most of it is the equivalent of reproduction parts with Porsche labels.

We just have to accept the new reality. There is Porsche that we all grew up with, and then there is Porsche post VW merger. And the evidence speaks for itself.

One thing I will say is at least the Porsche replacement parts are good to great quality. I had an E-type a few years back in a momentary lapse of good decision making.
These poor British car peeps are buying overseas replicas of garbage Lucas parts. Like it was already crap and now some overseas company is making a clone of it. All of it is trash. Switches fall apart in your hand. I had a brand new starter relay (shiny Lucas stamp)…it failed internally and fused and engaged the starter and tried to slam the car into the wall I was parked in front of….wouldn’t stop till I got the battery disconnected and thought it through to bypass that part to get home.
Incidentally, the rear wheel flew off that car will driving (slowly thank goodness) because when it was restored some goober put the hubs on the wrong sides of the car (they look identical….only the knock off spinner thread direction is different).
Anyway, Porsches and maybe a Gullwing (without Rudge wheels) someday for the rest of my life. No more knock off wheels for me. No more British cars.

Is that a fair comparison, anything is better than Lucas. On the contrary, I've had a few OEM porsche parts bad out of the box. Go figure.

It's funny to me that Porsche prides itself on all of the older cars still running on the road today, while at the same time charging obscene prices for the parts to keep em going.

I'm afraid this is the new normal, nothing ever gets cheaper once people accept the higher costs.
