Fabspeed airbox cover delete - reviews?
Has anyone tried the Fanspeed airbox cover delete? It’s a frame that holds in the filter, but means you can leave the airbox cover off. Seems like a simple solution to get access to more air. It’s the gold piece in the photo.
Anyone tried it and noticed results? Anyone dynoed it?

You will get a lot of hot wash air from the engine with this invention.... there is a reason for the original design.
I played with the drilling an original airbox and besides a cool sound factor there was no power gain.

My coupe has one of those…had it when I bought it. I like the induction sound coming from my Targa which has the stock piece. I’ll probably buy a stock piece and put it on my coupe. I don’t like carbon fiber looking stuff anyway. My Targa also feels like a faster car but it’s very low miles and maybe that’s why.

I'm not convinced that the hot air is really that much of a problem in the 964. When you're driving at speed the turnover rate of air in the engine compartment is very high, and even when you're stationary the fan moves a ton of air at high RPM.
I doubt you gain anything from the open airbox other than intake noise, but without back to back testing I'd be hard pressed to believe that it makes a power difference outside of the normal margin of error for dyno measurement.

At speed the engine fan and the intake suck in so much air that if you don't have the plugs in the rear engine tin you risk melting the poly bushings in your fancy new Wevo engine mounts because of the suction created in the upper engine bay...we know this because mine melted for that reason....very hot air from the cat got sucked up through that hole and liquified the bushings. Short of that, and those holes plugged as they should be, as spartan6 said up above, the air in the upper bay is always fresh from the outside. There may be a little more heat, but it's marginal.
As was also said, induction noise can be fun. You aren't getting a performance boost. Happy to see empirical data same day on the same dyno with the same car and no other changes...but I'm going with zero gain until i see that.
Further- the look and feel of that piece is very nice - so that is a plus. Howwver, I'm very much not a fan of the k&n style filters (like the one in the picture) and unless one is going to properly clean and oils theirs, they are a really bad idea. I rarely see them properly maintained...which is just asking for wear in the engine...for again, zero gain.
Always remember - if you change nothing else, and you breath in more air...you are just therefore, running the engine leaner. So you would have to get more gas into the mixture, yould then have to squeeze that gas into a chamber, not have it pre-ignite, and then you have to explode all of said gas, and subsequently move the remnants out of the cylinder and get that exhaust more freely out the pipe...all in some sort of magical orchestration that can happen a bazillion times per minute.
...just opening the intake isn't the greatest idea.
