A part of the center console showing the carbon fiber insert, the titanium shift handle and button, the graphic equalizer and the carbon fiber knee bar with the carbon fiber end plate (without the "normal screws").

I am going to have to use a dictionary and find more words to describe the awesome parts you are putting into that car! I understand that you could go even further in the weight reduction but decided againts it since there were no commercial benefits in terms of proof of concept, or something along those lines... BTW... I have spent the last hour looking for a book that I have that, I believe, shows your car...

Yes, weight could have been reduced beyond the approximately 550 kg already shed but it would have proved nothing, e.g., the manufacturing of carbon fiber doors or fenders is nothing special nor does simply removing items such as air conditioning, carpets, etc. accomplish anything in this instance.
P.S. The titanium door sills actually saved a few grams! Last edited by Robert Linton; 12-31-2004 at 05:50 PM. |

Porsche had it made by Alpine which, when the car was built, was the original equipment supplier of the head unit.

Talk about no detail overlooked - it looks like the System Tester plug cover has a porsche crest on it!
Robert, what is the small plastic cover on the door pocket below the door handle? |

Oh man, that is a unit I haven't seen since the late 80s, early 90s. It was like 1500.00 at the time. Believe it or not I still have one of those.

The plug over the system tester is leather covered and has the Porsche Crest embossed thereon. In this case, for that added bit of weight reduction, the large multi-pin plug is removable via a quick disconnect. The small "plastic cover" is, in fact, an ashtray, one of which swivels out of each door.

Stephen:
In its day, that equalizer was the best available and Porsche commissioned Alpine to modify its controller for this installation and to put the Porsche script on it to match the factory head unit. P.S. The speakers are very lightweight composite basket units and the amplifier is also a lightweight unit with a built in cooling fan and that is installed under a carbon fiber cover with ventillation grills below the passenger seat. P.P.S. Attached is a rather poor picture showing the head unit (and for those who like details, a glimpse of the titanium hydraulic handbrake lever with [although not able to be seen in this shot] the Porsche script engraved by the factory thereon and of the carbon fiber seat brackets) . Robert, what is the red light to the left of the tach? And, the two switches above the Alpine equalizer? Thanks again for sharing!

The red light tells you that the heated rear windscreen of the removable hardtop with the electric sunroof is on. The one switch above the equalizer is for mobile phone (the car has a Sony Ericsson 910i) power on/off(there is a green LED in the carbon fiber center tunnel insert that lights were power is on) and the other is to raise and lower the electric antenna.
