Clutch Replacement on a 964 (do it myself)
Hi,
I want to replace the clutch on my C2 964 (1991).
It's a M-series prosche.
In http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/...clutch_pg1.htm
I could find that there a 2 versions :
Sachs Clutch Kit, 911 Carrera 2/4 (1990-91)
Sachs Clutch Kit, 911 Carrera 2/4 (1992-94)
Is this because of the flywheel that has been changed from 1992 on ?
If my car is from 1991, can I just order the 1990-91 clutch kit or do I have to remove the old one before I place an order ?
Regards
Peter

Hello Peter,
Why not look over here www.carnewal.com
Gert is in Belgium and might give you the answer. Send him an email. He might reply within 5 minutes... thats the way he does business.
The actual replacement is easy though time consuming. You can do it.

I've send him a email 2 minutes ago... 3 more to go :-)
But.. if somebody could give me more technical advice, don't hesitate.

Not knowledgeable enough to suggest how to do it on a 964 but try www.p-car.com This is a 993 site but many DIYs are similar on a 964.
Keep your VIN handy and ask one of the "soon to answer" gurus about your options.
Good luck

Before you assemble the transmission back to the engine, be absolutely certain that you have the correct lubricant, and amount of the correct lubricant on the input shaft to the transmission......... or you'll be sorry...... I can't tell you how I know this though
(If you have questions about the replacement procedure, post away!)

I would love to hear how this DIY goes as I know I'll be doing mine someday. Perhaps an inclusion for the DIY thread? The "101 Projects" book only covers through 89 although it is the same tranny. Any documentation would be greatly appreciated.
TIA,

I know... it's frustrating that there's no book about 964 DIY's.
But.. I promise you this.. If I replace my clutch, I will make a step by step procedure with lot's of pictures. :-)
I've done this already for "How to adjust the door windows on a 964 cabriolet"

The "101 Projects" book says you have to remove the engine to do the clutch (pre 964 of course) but I thought I read somewhere on Rennlist that you don't have to remove the engine on a 964.
Is your clutch slipping?

Peter, It is possible that you may have the Freudenberg flywheel depending on your mileage and history. If you do, you will want to replace it with a Luk flywheel, or a LWT flywheel.
I recently replaced mine and used the factory manual. No problems at all.
I dropped the engine and tranny together. My suggestion would be to build a dollly for the engine to rest on. The instructions are on this site somewhere. Once the engine is out, the tranny removal only involves 4 nuts. The factory manual instructions tell you what lube to use.
You will need some XZN sockets. You may also want to change the gear oil while it's out.
Good Luck

Peter,
In addition to the factory manuals, Adrian's book includes a full step-by-step with photos and if you can get it, Eric K's mobile phone number for when its 11 at night and you can't figure something out.

I have the factory manual, Pet 6, Adrian's book an the "How to rebuild...".. and this forum ;-)
I'll try to find the instructions for building a dolly for the engine.
btw. My car has 160.000 km (100.000 miles) .. I don't know anything about the history of the car.
Can a 964 run 160.000 km with a Freudenberg flywheel ?
