Robert, It is an amazing project and I'm sure it must be very pleasing to see it come together. What can you tell us about the brakes. Obviously, they are carbon and the calipers say "porsche racing" on them. Did you get those brake parts from Porsche Motosports ? If yes, were they specifically made for this project or borrowed from another application. I only ask because I have never seen those brakes before and they look absolutely stunning, as do all the other nitrate coated titanium pieces, especially the titanium centerlock hub. Amazing !! Is the silver colored rotor hat also titanium or aluminum ?

The America GS has had three sets of calipers in its history. Originally, it had the equivalent of the front and rear calipers of the Type 964 European Cup Cars but colored purple – in fact, it was a prototype of colored calipers (one day I'll recount the story of a group of "grownups" sitting at Brembo Headquarters in Bergamo, Italy choosing the correct purple). Next the factory provided it with the extra set of the brakes of the Turbo LeMans GT, an Type 964 derived on-off race car built by the factory (although "copies" were built by privateers), which had the finest brakes available for the Type 964. So far as I know, only these calipers ever bore the inscription "Porsche Racing". Then, as part of this project, when the decision was made to do some testing of carbon ceramic brake rotors (in this case, the rotors made by SGL and supplied to Porsche [Brembo also makes a carbon ceramic rotor which is found on several cars including Ferraris]), there was a need for more sophisticated calipers providing among other things better cooling for the brake fluid and these calipers were designed specifically for this application. An outline of the brake system, excluding the details of the front and rear forced air cooling mechanisms, is as follows:
1. "America GS" Aluminum Lithium Monobloc Front Calipers Including: a. 8 Cross and Gun Drilled Titanium Pistons Per Caliper b. Air Gaps c. Two Pads Per Side d. Quick Release Pad Pins e. Titanium Mounting Pieces f. Shallow Depth Titanium Brake Line Fitting g. Small Diameter Titanium Crossover Pipe Nuts h. Titanium Quick Disconnect Valves In Place Of Bleed Screws i. Titanium Quick Disconnect Valves Between: i. Chassis Hard Lines and ii. Raychem Covered Lightweight Stainless Steel Braided Flexible Brake Lines With Machined Titanium Fittings To Calipers j. Titanium Quick Disconnect Mounting Brackets With Titanium Fasteners And Washers 2. "America GS" Aluminum Lithium Monobloc Rear Calipers Including: a. 4 Cross and Gun Drilled Titanium Pistons Per Caliper b. Air Gaps c. Dual Pads d. Quick Release Pad Pins e. Titanium Mounting Pieces f. Shallow Depth Titanium Brake Line Fitting g. Small Diameter Titanium Crossover Pipe Nuts h. Titanium Quick Disconnect Valves In Place Of Bleed Screws i. Titanium Quick Disconnect Valves Between: i. Chassis Hard Lines and ii. Raychem Covered Lightweight Stainless Steel Braided Flexible Brake Lines With Machined Titanium Fittings To Calipers 3. "America GS" 2618 Aluminum Floating Front And Rear Brake Disk Bells With Titanium Bobbin Mounting System 4. Carbon Ceramic Generation II Front And Rear Ventilated And Cross-Drilled Disks (350 Millimeter x 34 Millimeter Front, 350 Millimeter x 28 Millimeter Rear) 5. "America GS" Pagid Special Compound And Special Shape High Performance Racing Brake Pads (26 Millimeter Front, 26 Millimeter Rear) 6. Porsche LeMans High Volume Master Cylinder And Brake Amplifier 7. Porsche LeMans Hydraulics 8. "America GS" Carbon Fiber/Titanium/Aluminum Brake Accumulator 9. "America GS" Carbon Fiber Brake Hydraulics Cover 10. "America GS" Carbon Fiber Anti-Lock Braking System Pump Cover 11. Porsche LeMans Brake Pressure Proportioning Component 12. Porsche LeMans Racing Anti-Lock Braking System With Modified 37-Pin Connector 13. Porsche LeMans Racing Anti-Lock Braking System Control Unit Attached To "America GS" Aluminum Mounting Bracket For Added Protection And Rapid Access 14. "America GS" Front Brakes Anti-Lock Braking System Sensor Wheels – 45 Teeth 15. "America GS" Rear Brakes Anti-Lock Braking System Sensor Wheels – 48 Teeth 16. Upgraded Front And Rear Anti-Lock Braking System Sensors 17. "America GS" Dashboard Mounted Anti-Lock Braking System On/Off Switch With Red Warning Light Emitting Diode 18. Porsche LeMans Master Cylinder Mounted Brake Pedal Actuated Anti-Lock Braking System Emergency Cutoff Switch 19. "America GS" Wiring Harness For Anti-Lock Braking System On/Off Switch And Emergency Cutoff Switch 20. "America GS" Hydraulic Hand Parking Brake Mechanism 21. "America GS" Titanium Hydraulic Hand Parking Brake Lever With Engraved Porsche Script 22. Castrol SRF Brake Fluid And, as this was a one and only such system, permission was granted for the aluminum lithium (material generally used only for F1) calipers to bear the inscription found on the previous units. P.S. There is one thing missing from the picture above and the foregoing list -- the silver plated lightweight nuts attaching the brake disks to the bells via the titanium bobbins. |

Robert,
I don't think this has come up before but, when you ordered Humpty Dumpty, was it with the intention of taking it down this road as a project, or did that idea come later? It strikes me that, of all the Porsches you could have chosen for the scheme, the America GS Roadster would have to be the one most suited for all this 'beyond state-of-the-art' stuff. Then again, the Panamericana would have been nice, too!

Robert, Thankyou very much for that detailed explanation of the parts. It certainly is a one of a kind piece of art and a joy to look at. Bravo !! I'd love to see you give an old 964 RSR this treatment.
