Default New McLaren Dashboard

Although perhaps not for a 964, I thought you might enjoy seeing the latest.

Very interesting... although I have no idea what some of the numbers may be for

Is that something you are planning to use in your P-car? The screen seems exceptionally clear. I would imagine it is not a typical LCD-type screen.

I've no idea. Clarification may be beneficial to all. But as you've delivered it, it's like visiting the dark side of the moon.

Thin film transistor, a type of LCD flat display screen, in which each pixel is controlled by transistors. TFT technology provides among the best resolution of all flat screen techniques.

Bob,

You're always a great read, but I'm struggling to bring my fat RSA below 2800#. Working on the power, waiting on the translation. :-)

TFT is the type of screen used in most laptops.

TFT is the type of screen used in most LCD monitor displays, period. I think the 'exceptionally clear' part is because the panel itself has a polished/glossy filter instead of the normal matte ones we've seen on Dell/IBM/Whatever panels since they became popular.

The polished filters are becoming the rage for just that reason - they're so clear. Great for displays where there's not too much ambient light, otherwise the reflections are a bear. Apple's doing it as an option with their new MacBooks and LCDs.

It surprises me that McLaren would opt for the glossy display, as I would think the reflections in a car in full daylight could cause some dangerous problems. Maybe this is just a mockup, or they plan on overlaying a filter as necessary.

Actually, it's working quite well. The TFT display is illuninated indoors with a backlight and outdoors by sunlight.

Now I remember of what this reminded me! A 1960 Oldsmobile speedometer. Seriously. The numbers were laid out on a straight bar graph. Under it was a slender colorbar that moved across the dial, indicating the speed and changing colors. The eye could, at a quick glance, recognize the approximate speed of the vehicle.

I confess I'm a little slow to get on board the digital look, but combining a digital representation of an analog display could not only make it more palatable, but a quicker read for the eye.
