Default Removing rear bumper!!

To mount my new Dansk exhaust , I had to take the whole bumper off in order to change the left quarter panel. It’s a quick job if you attack it in the right order. Since I bought this car, I have had a very annoying sound from the rear, a bit depending on the rpm. Finally I found the reason with the bumper on the ground. In the picture with the yellow arrow you can see the little “ sucker” that was loose, making a lot off vibrating sound. I glued it with my super duper instant glue!
What’s more annoying is that one off the bumper joint was broken, and I realized that the other one was welded before….Witch means probably an old accident!
Have to give it to a workshop tomorrow to have it welded, and then meanwhile ….clean, clean and clean with the clearance I now have at the rear.
Looking forward to have the new muffler installed. Any one knows if I should go for a G-pipe to this exhaust to get that goose spread allover the body when I fire up

Can you double check how you posted your pictures? I can't see any of them.

Polman

How easy is it to get the rear bumper off? whats the right order?

Does the cover actually attach to the support? mines completely gone on both sides (like you suspect an accident as some point in it's life) and for weight reduction I'll take it off and leave off if poss.

Thanks

Rob

Rob, there are three or 4 screws on each side in the wheel wells, you have to remove those wheel well covers first. THen there are 2 main allen bolts 1 on each side that hold the bumper on and they are usually corroded and frozen so get a breaker bar. First thing though is to remove the right rear tail light and unhook that electical connector then get it through the grommet. The bumper is fairly heavy so dont drop it.

Thanks Jerry

Think I may be ok with the allen bolts (both of the bumper mounts have corroded and the large bar is just hanging in space.

Can this large bar be removed and the bumper refitted without the risk of the bumper leaving the car?

I would remove the bumper cover from the beam first.
My proceedure would be:
(0) Jack up the rear of the car
(1) Remove rear wheels
(2) Remove rearmost wheel well liners
(3) Remove eight 8 mm head head bolts holding bumper cover to quarter panels (four per side)
(4) Remove license plate lenses from bumper cover and push rubber seals/wires into cavities
(5) Remove two allen screws under license plate area and slide the cover off. Before you get the cover completely off reach in and free license plate harness from the cover.
(6) Remove the exhaust tip (two on the Turbo)
(7) Remove the two 10 mm socket head bolts (one is under the exhaust tip you just removed)
(8) Slide the beam off the mounts
(9) Stand back and enjoy your favorite adult beverage while admiring your mechanical prowess

When you have the bumper on the ground, and wish to proceed with the change ( in my case) off the left quarter panel, you have some exiting rivets that connects the alu-bar with the plastic bumper. You have to drill them out in order to separate everything, and get clearness to the tree bolts that holds the panel with the bumpers centre part.
It´s not funny to handle the bumper alone, so be carful with scratches……

By the way....it was time to change my avatar...to show some other interest from my early childhood beside Porsches...
Have a pick up for the welded bumper support now. I will post pictures off the result…

Yep that's the one. Both of the mounting brackets have broken off, one was even held on with a tie wrap!!! (prev. owner not me by the way!!)

Both of the actual supports have rotted through as well.

In my pursuit of weight reduction for the track, wondered if I could take this off and leave off?

Rob, me thinks you may be takin the weight loss a bit too far!

Your car has to be made of sumthing! Thin air isnt good for car construction.
