C4 engine destroyed at an AX
Today we went to yet another circuit with the Porsche Club to do some Autocross fun.
Highlight was the presence of the only 997 GT2 sold in Argentina ( he got beat by two 997 Turbo)
The lowest moment was when a colleague with a 1990 C4 running at 7000 reps in 3rd missed the upshift to 4th and found second instead crying:
apparently the overreved engine damage is near total
The car had 62500 miles and the driver was one of top guns in my class
After this happened all other 964 drivers (me included) started shifting more carefully

Ouch!! Sad to here a fellow 964 owner makes the infamous "Money Shift". I hope they can recover from it.

Maybe AX means different things in different countries.... here is a time trial in a racing circuit made a little slower by means of 2-3 or more chicanes
Faster drivers did get to 4th in both straights just before starting the braking phase near the chicanes

As the OP has already replied, this was more a TT than a pure AX. The Carrera Region (El Paso) runs a similar event at Arroyo Seco Raceway each fall. Great fun.
In sympathy with the OP's report, on my 1st AX in the 964, I found reverse rather than 1st on a very, VERY tight AX. The engine lived, but the gearbox turned in to a box of broken metal bits. Ouch does not begin to describe it. At that point, I quit autocrossing with clubs known to do overly tight layouts.

Henry, scared me there for a minute... I thought it was your car... Sorry to read about the situation with your friend's car.
I hope he can fix it and get it back on the road soon.
Saludos!

Thanks Jaime, for your concern, but there is no danger of me breaking the car... no way I am going to damage my car for a lousy trophy... I always drive well inside the safety boundaries so I´m always in the rear... but I have lot´s of fun and learn to drive the car faster than in the streets

The first time I went to an autocross at Jack Murphy in San Diego I was almost ready to shift into 5th at the start/finish timing lights.........granted, a 901 box 2.7L car, but I was still about 105 mph.
