Default The futur of Turbo technology in the US market

The success of the 'Cash for Clunkers' program shows that a consumer appetite exists for fuel efficient options on traditional engine platforms that don't sacrifice the power, reliability and price that Americans demand," said David Paja, Vice President, Marketing for Honeywell Turbo Technologies. "For that reason, almost every major automaker has announced plans to broadly introduce turbocharged engines to the U.S. market in the coming years. We anticipate demand for gas and diesel turbocharged engines in the U.S. market may increase from 5% today to 25% by 2014 and could top 85% by 2020."

turbo... & efficiency? & OT?

It would seem those mavens for mileage at Honda would've been all over this (turbo'ing smaller engines) long ago if it was an uncontested notion of efficiency.

For gas engines a turbo can increase overall efficiency because the turbo increases the volumetric efficiency. But there a difficult compromise between increased mpg, performance, lag, and drivability.

On diesel turbo is a no brainer.

It's all about faking the test drive cycle to get the highest mileage rating possible, while allowing the manufacturer to build (and advertise) a vehicle that's most desirable in the customer's eye.
