Check the temperature switch (964-624-110-00-M100). My temps were running high and not engaging the fan. I could let the car run in the garage and let it heat up prior to changing and it would get real high. I jumped the pin connections first to ensure the relay was working and the fan would run in low and high mode before I determined it was the switch. There is a DIY @ http://p-car.com/diy/fan/. Check it out. It might the issue.

Oh it's a cheap fix too. $36.50 on Pelicanparts.

I've done the fan mod which included putting a 944 switch on the dash. You can in the mean time disconnect the wire to the oil cooler fan infront which will force the fan to run at high speed all the time. The disadvantage of running in high all the time is that it tends to keep the engine "cooler" than it normally should run at lower speeds, and strangely enough, the car tends to run warmer when running at high speeds (ask me how I know)
Not sure, but I thought a failed relay switch could also cause the low speed fan not to kick in. I can't find the link to the fan mod but it involves cutting a switch into the G12 line on the climate control box to manually run the oil cooler fan at High speed. I think I used a switch something like: http://www.944online.com/cgi-bin/ASI...lectrical-9441 and then removed the labeling. It took me a while to figure out the root cause and I don't use the switch anymore. I replaced both the thermostat and then the relay (which fixed the problem). -tom

Thanks all, really grateful for the input. Car's going in for a brake upgrade to the 964 Turbo versions, so good timing for him to check the oil cooler.

Mine doesn't get past 10 o'clock even in traffic... was stuck in bad start-stop traffic this evening for cloSE to an hour and it didn't go past 10. Temp dropped quickly once car was on the move.

Before you spend big bucks on a thermostat... Do the test of jumping the contacts to manually check if the fan is working, then replace the ceramic resistor that controls when the fan comes one (these go bad with time...

OK, it's the thermostat. Big bucks??
The mechanic's looking for a used version. Does this require opening up the engine in any way?

Did he check the ceramic resistor? ![]() Why is he trying to replace the thermostat without doing those checks first?

Yes he did. Thermostat. This is the guy who built roadsleeper's RSR replica, and fitted 3 pre-993 911s with the 993 rear suspension. I think he knows how to fix the car.
