Default How long does it take for your 964 to get close to the temp red zone?

Was in stop-go traffic yesterday, and after about 25 mins, the temp crept up to just below the red zone and the warning light (the red ! on the same gauge) came on. The light went off after moving again, but temp didn't drop. The rear spoiler was put up manually after 15 min of being stuck, but the temp still kept going up.

Normal?

Never even seen past the 9 o'clock on my car even in a Perth summer with A/C running and peak hour traffic. Perhaps it's the humidity rather than the air temperature which is causing the overheating? What mark does the temp normally sit at?

Maybe your oil thermostat is sticking/faulty.

Mine was up to between 9 and 10 o'clock last night when stuck in traffic on the M6 for around 1 hour - came down quickly enough once the car started moving for a sustained period. Is there anything that can be done to help cooling in this scenario ?

You could be right. The mechanic thinks that the low speed fan switch for the front oil cooler is spoilt, so will be checking that. Happened again this evening, and almost hit the red zone.

It;s usually 28C ambient air temp here, and it's not happened before as it stays at 9 o"clock usually.

there is a switch mod that can be wired in so you can turn the fan on manually if needed

When the engine is hot, put your hand on the right front fender, right next to the headlight. Is it hot or cool? It should be very warm. If not, I suspect your thermostat may be faulty.

I have never seen mine go into the red even during a hot summer autox. Checking if the fender is warm/hot while its been sitting in hot sunlight may make it difficult to make a determination if things are working.

Here is a good link on how to check your oil cooler fans.

http://www.porsche964.co.uk/technical/cooling.htm

If the car is running hot there are a few items that could be the culprit

Oil cooler fan relay
Oil cooler fan failure of low or high speed fan
Oil cooler fan resistor
Thermostat issues

Another good link on Oil cooler fan operation and troubleshooting

Remove that undere tray right away! It will make your car much much faster and cooler!!! If you find an RSA with crinkle finish under the bonnet and wheel wells buy it right away thats a much much faster car. The ultimate would be one of those seam welded RSA's with RSA chalked onto the cases. The real secret, and I should not tell it here but I will is they pulled the best 3.6's off the line and specially put them in the RSA's!

Also see if the fan is on. It could also be the thermo switch going into the cooler thats not turning the fan on.

I spent about 20-30mins in stop and go traffic on the freeway going up to LA and it rose to between 9-10 o'clock. This was during a cooler day this summer. The comments above are informational, sounds like there is something wrong.

I did the fan mod (installing a switch to break contact on wire #16 can force the cooling fans on). I use that to force the fans on when in traffic.

When I first got my car the temp would rise dramatically on hot days. It was a bad thermostat.
After I changed it, I've not had any problems with the car getting hot.
