Sorry I missed your call Geoff. Your spark should be fine as it runs with ether no problem.
My money is still on no injector pulse, Did you try getting a NOID lite and checking the injector harness connections yet?

no.

What Rick is referring to is he thinks I'm not getting a signal to the injectors to tell them to open. How common is this issue, and has anyone tested them using a NOID light?

If your not getting a signal then nothing is telling the DME that engine is cranking via the flywheel sensor but that would typically negate the spark as well I would think. If you decide you want to try another flywheel sensor I have a spare that I know is in working order .

Also the fuel pump wont run unless it gets a signal as well.

I have used noid lights in the past they work well and can help but what has me confused as that typically points towards bad DME and with you changing out the DME to a different one ( I think you said you had 3 of them) then that is ruled out.

and the DME jumper gave me the same no-start result. I tried looking for the flywheel sensor, but had no luck. I'm a photographer, I'm better with pictures

The flywheel sensor is on the driver side. If you jack up the rear of the car, remove the left rear wheel then look at the seam between the engine and transmission. You should see the sensor. There is a good picture of it in this Pelican thread.

Hawk - When you said you tried swapping three DMEs, did you mean the computer or the relay? Ben is speculating that you may have a faulty DME computer.

I can also confirm that a faulty crank position sensor will prevent the car from starting. I had forgotten to hook up the sensor the last time I installed the motor. It would crank nicely but would never fire. Took me a while to find the connector had been installed incorrectly. Once hooked up properly, it fired up.

The crank position sensor mounts near the flywheel. This is where its wire pigtail terminates. Its on a bracket behind your heater blower. Its either the green or black connector. I don't remember which.

I'll double check that too. I know I've had the damn blower off a bazillion times, and it's off now so it's easy to check. speaking of the darn blower... the connector on the blower side of the wires has broken. I have half of the plastic, but no Porsche part. There's a Mercedes symbol on it with part number. Anyone tell me what the replacement Porsche part is for that?

I had mistakenly unplugged the crank sensor when replacing the coils and banged my head for days trying to figure out why it wouldn't start. Hope that you're trouble is that easy.

Have you checked your resonance valve, if that is stuck open, the engine will not start.
P.S. Is your car a manual or tiptronic? If tiptronic, it could also be the transmission positioning switch has failed.

I checked the upper connections on the crank sensor, and they seemed fine. I'll pull the wheel and look at the lower end tonight. I'll also check the resonance flap.

Does anyone know the proper NOID light to get? I'm scheduled to get into the shop on the 19th, so I have a few days to try a few more things first. Could really use a pair of small hands to get to that damned immobilizer too- mine are far too large.

OFF-TOPIC - but another new avatar...? The office will probably block Rennlist if they see me reading one of your posts Geoff! (Incidentally I preferred yesterdays iteration, it milked the imagination a bit more....just sayin')

No offence, but you need to get out of the office more.
