964 C4 backdate to 1973 Gulf 3.0 RS
I've been asked by a few people to start a thread on my current project, taking a lovely original 964 C4 and butchering into some kind of retro look alike. Colin from 9M's excellent 60 page running reports on his similar project for a client in Malaysia was a great inspiration and I'm sure saw an increase in lottery tickets sales across the Rennlist forum.
Why a 964 C4? 4WD and ABS are handy, mainly because I cant drive a 911 properly and as I've got older the more of a ***** woofter I've become. Even Porsche's wheezing asthmatic airconditioning would also provide some comfort during both hot English summer days. Seen the Youtube clip of the cat inside a goldfish bowl? That's me inside a 911.
The Singer is great but I didnt sing when I saw their prices. More of a very long whistle…but I will be using some of their ideas as ...ahem…’inspiration’
I was also given an original Gulf Racing grill badge, cufflinks, pen and stickers by a neighbour who worked for them in the early 1970's. Boyhood dreams of the original Gulf liveried Porsche's would turn into reality...first find the right donor vehicle...it had to be blue as I don’t want to completely colour change it (poverty) and no sunroof ( again money saving). Not easy as they’re standard on a UK car and the first owner would have to ask for it as a delete option. I managed to find one in 2007 for a reasonable £11,250. The project was finally off! Right up until I had to sell it in 2009 to pay for some home renovations. Or get divorced. It was a close call I can tell you. Very, very close…I spend the next few years checking the internet for another one. No joy. My wife wonders why I’m giving her the evil eye whilst I scour the classifieds every night…”nothing darling just looking at cars”…I’ll give her mid life crisis….
Forward two years and my brother finally decides to pay me back for an old debt. He still owes me a zillion zillion pounds from a bet he lost when he was eight. This is still unpaid as is another bet he lost a year later for “everything in the world” . Anyway I get some money and we decide not to share this information with any wives. I call up the guy I sold the 964 to and reminded him that he promised me a first option. As a very nice guy he agrees to sell it back for what he paid for it (£11,250). Thanks Hector! Love you! I’ve had five years to research the project and decide on Pro9 in Kidderminster to do the work. They’ve done a Martini 2.8 RSR 964 C2 featured in 911 and Porsche World and their quotes were reasonable. £15k for the whole bodywork conversion to 3.0 RS with custom roll cage and steel arches to be finished in Pantone 328 Gulf Blue. Front long bonnet and tricky rear light conversion they’d done before and it looked good. The tea tray rear spoiler reminds me of the Covin 911 so they’ll be fitting a 2.7RS ducktail instead. This build is not about originality of a replica, it needs to look period and like it’s had a hard life. I’ll be stonechipping it deliberately , roughing up the roll cage with a mallet, painting this and the body with kerosene after its been painted (makes it nice and dull) and fitting it with number plates, tax disc holders that are all correct for the 1970’s. And old. The Gulf stripes will be vinyl. The scrutineers and paddock passes will be 1970’s. Every modern switch will be changed to period, including the diff lock and the computer reset. The labelling machine for the switches is from the 1970’s - previously used on my DB5 for self destruct and ejector seat labelling. The climate control unit will have to hide in the glovebox.
It has to be a 3.0RS due to the following factors:
Front oil cooler and air con rad need the big wide, deep bumper at the front
To have a heater and twin rear exhausts you also need the deep wide rear bumper otherwise too much of a squeeze.
The other great joy of this project is how much the bits are worth that you take off. I’ve sold the interior for £1000 and the rear spoiler, bonnet and switches etc are worth more than the fibreglass ones I’m replacing them with. Even the *** lighter sells for £10. Hellooo kitty.
First the strip out…Porsche use very heavy duty glue, nasty job, next week the wings get tacked on…

Ah...I was mistaken as to the rapid progress being made, it appears that it now has large wings of steel...tacked on...first feel for how she will look...a great day!
