Default Trickle charger connection

Hi everyone.
Perhaps a simple question for someone to answer...!
I've bought a CTEC trickle charger that has a fast connection lead that can be left permenantly attached to the +ve and -ve terminals on my battery.
To use the charger whilst the battery is still in the car and its usual 2 leads attached... Can I simply connect the charger leads to their relative points, or, as the book suggests, should I put the +ve lead on the battery, but the -ve lead somewhere on the metal body of the car, away from a fuel line?

Advice please!
James...

Hi James,

I just attached them both to the relevant battery terminals and it's been fine for about a yea like that.

Yep. Install the quick connect directly to the proper terminals.

My CTEK stays on the (small race) battery every second the car is not in use.

Same here!

Mine's been on 3 years as above with no issues and it works a treat.

Ditto. Straight onto the battery terminals and make sure you fully close the bonnet (frunk) to turn the boot and engine lights off when the charger is working. Been doing this for 8 yrs+.

Great... That certainly will make it easy to connect etc... Hence the name!
Although... If I've got to close the bonnet completely.... How do I get power into the charger? I'm running it from an external plug on the house.....?

Gently close it directly over the thin leads. It works.

I had to drill larger holes to fit the Optima battery. Check first..

Yup - hard-wired directly to battery leads - works great.

Great stuff... That's what I had hoped for... I think I'll just stick to NOT reading the instructions from now on!!!

Cheers.

That's how I read instructions as well. Good to see no issues if you just connect to corresponding terminals
