The 993 guys have a tie rod pinning tool they are passing around, it may help:

Wont work on the 964 unfortunately due to the design of the inner tie rod joint. Totally different than the 993 joint and to run pinned 993 inners on a 964 you must use 993 outer tie rods and uprights as well if I'm not mistaken as you can probably tell I've been looking into this for a while, lol

Does it really matter? The 964 will get around the track faster than any of the BMW's mentioned. It's like comparing apples and oranges isn't it?

It is a theory. Also, our racks are mounted to the frame with bushings, while again BMW (at least most 3ers anyway) steering racks are hard mounted to the front subframe. Those two things together could certainly cause vagueness IMO. Another thing that may help is a steering rack from a 993, which iIRC is a quicker ratio than a 964 and would in theory help with responsiveness. It would also be newer and possibly not have a "dead zone" in the center of the rack that ours could be starting to form due to use?

Not a stock 964, I'm afraid. Automotive technology & performance has progressed light years since the 964 was king.

And if it effects enjoyment of the drive for us, shouldnt that matter? A newer mitsu evo wil outlap a 964 all day dollar for dollar, but I dont enjoy it, so I dont drive it. Irrelevant.

My point is that you're comparing apples to oranges. The way that my '06 Silverado handles ruins my driving enjoyment but it's a different beast, just like the BMW and 964.

Also, I seriously doubt that a stock 330i or newer 328i would beat a stock 964 around the track.

I owned an '08 STi that would beat the pants off of my 964, but it's still an STi and not a 964. Also, EVO's suck

A 964 should feel much more direct and sensitive than a 330sport (i have both). Something is amiss. One thing that is typical of all 911 since inception; they are very sensitive to the condition of the tires and alignment. I've run down several odd handling issues that had to do with the tires, either worn, hard or just the construction of the tire made for odd handling. Often a pcar will sit on a "new" set of tires timed out and hard with age long befor tread is even scrubbed, new tires- problem solved. Also check the alignment. Many handling issues on 911's come from issues with the REAR track.

Fresh alignment (zero front toe, 4.28 caster, .16 rear toe per side, approaching -2.0 camber all around), fresh BFG Rivals (but felt the same on the old PS2s), Powerflex bushings everywhere, ERP monoball spring plates, etc.

The car turns in eagerly once I get into the meat of the steering input but the initial response right around center is not there.

I'm going to get my GoPro and see if I can capture what I'm experiencing on video and share it w/ you all.

Assuming your alignment is accurate and no worn suspension parts, tire construction is responsible for responsiveness. The new tires are a little slower to respond. Give the tires some time. I tried few tire brands on my car and unfortunately performance is directly related to the price of the tire.

What are your tire pressures? What rim size on your '64 and beemer?

We need to coordinate so we show up to the same autocross event at least once. It doesn't appear you registered for PCA this weekend, and it already sold out, so maybe some other time. Both of us didn't show up to the last event at TMS.

Vandit - a 225 width tire on a 7" wide wheel isn't going to turn-in as well as on an 8 or 9" (!) wheel. The Miata hot setup is 9" wide wheels and 225's, for comparison.
