Jack: Nice thread. As others have said I would forget trying to create a complete replica and focus on something that is visually comparable and achieves your lightweight goal. All the stuff with master cylinders and torque splitters seems a waste of time to me, don't lose sight of where and how you want to use the car. What will you do colour wise if you go this route, would cobalt blue work? Your colour with the Cup 1 wheels you have now looks great to my eyes, but very similar to what everyone else does, so your project would be a great change.

On the wheels, isn't that 9" wheel with the curved outer spokes just the same as used on a lot of 928's and 944 turbo's?

Isnt that a 944 silver rose wheel? Forged wheels made for the Turbo SE.

If you mean the wheels posted by Ragnar, then no, they are not. The Silver rose wheels can be made to fit, but it takes spacers front and back.

Guess what I found today?

Yes a C4 light weight.

I post a picture when I get a chance and tomorrow, I'll have a bloody good look at the wheels.

Amazing cars, it's shame none seem to be have used as intended.
At today's price probably will never be used. I remember one being for sale with 4k KM's in 2001 for £65k. Which seemed absolutely mad back then, when you could easily buy a 993 GT or several 964RS for the same money.
Good luck with the repro and I live the oil filler on the rear aka 2.4S / ST.

It could be a prototype for the D90. I dont want to speculate on that, seems to be enough of people on this forum, who do that already and I can't see that leading us anywhere.

The wheels used on 924/944/928 up until 1989-1990 were all forged, and similar in design with the D90.

As far as I know, there were 3 different versions, and they all had that rounded surface transition from the spokes to the rim (shown below). They also the "crown" outside of the vents. The D90 did not have that same rounded transition, but the wheel on the picture has that, as well as some of the design properties that came with the D90's.

I`m sure 911 &PW had an article on one think it was a silver one in the uk with hardly any miles on it I will see if I can find it over the weekend but pretty sure it had the D90 style wheels on it rather than cups

At a guess, and it is only that.

Because these were intended to be competition cars, despite having no series to race in, it would make it easier to top up the oil in the pits without lifting the engine cover and potentially spilling oil over the hot engine bay??

Or maybe it was just an homage to the earlier cars?

Would be nice to see the design of the filler and oil tank from the wheelarch

Maybe it's because as an offroad car the long wheel travel and amount of debris flying around might damage the hose running from the standard filler position to the tank?
