Default 964 c4 parts

Are parts for repairs hard to come by?
Are these maintenance hogs? Thanks for all the input.

In general, parts are not difficult to get hold of, although some of the more special 4wd parts such as the planetary gear are expensive. A well maintained car is not especially a 'maintenance hog', however one with deferred maintenance will test your bank balance.

So would a c2 be better on the maintenance? Or better to go after a 993?

Check my thread 964 Purchase Lessons Learned. Some are C4 specific but many are about deferred maintenance. You could have that with a C2, C4 or 993. It pays to buy the best car you can afford and even then expect to spend 10% on fixing existing faults.

you can build a 964 from just a bare tub nowadays.

Everything is out there if you need it.

C4 is not necessarily any bigger of an issue service-wise. Stories of problems with the AWD system are rare. Be advised though that some of the necessary parts are pretty expensive (brake pump, internal gearing)...

C4/C2 decision should be based on what you want; I live in snow country (kinda, anyway) and adore AWD so for me there was no choice. The C2 offers a more classical 911 driving experience and is certainly simpler than the C4, which is potentially advantageous.

964 vs. 993 is also a very personal decision. The 993 is probably a better car in many ways- engine improvements, revised rear suspension, certainly newer, but to me they don't look like a 911, so again the decision was easy.

Like *any* problem, step zero in finding a solution is *always* to clearly define what the problem is. In this context, it means determining as precisely as you can what, exactly, you want from your new-to-you Porsche.
